Have analog; want digital?

I think I do.

So, I've got a fair amount of equipment built up from back in the 90's, barely used.

2 Tascam 238's
Tascam ATS-500 synchronizer
Tascam M-1516 - 16in/8 out
Proteus 2
Emu Proformance Plus
Alesis 3630 compressor
Alesis Microverb
AT 4033
Regular drum set and a Roland TD-7 set

And some other stuff. Yeah, the 90's were good to me. The 2000's? I'm doing totally different work now, for a non-profit. Extremely satisfying and meaningful work. I think you know what that means...

Since I am now hoping to spend a decent amount of time on this, I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to add an interface and a DAW. And go from the mixer out to the interface to the DAW. Maybe skipping the 238's? I don't know.

I can't afford a lot, so I was thinking about getting the Tascam US-800 and Reaper. I've got a decent notebook pc that should work for this.

I guess I'm thinking that since I'm about to learn a lot, I might as well decide now what environment I want to do my learning in. One of the other reasons for this is that I have a long tome friend who is using a DAW (Sonar) and I think it would be beneficial (more chance of working together) if I am in his environment.

Thoughts?

Thanks; I need all the help I can get.

There are many ways to combine analog and digital gear. What you have and how you plan to use it will dictate how the setup should be configured. I run a hybrid analog tracking - digital editing - analog mixing setup.
Also..your recording goals and budget will play a big part in how you set things up.

Thanks. I plan to do most of the music myself, with some occasional help from friends. Which is one of the reasons i am thinking about a DAW, as it would be easier to collaborate.

My budget is low; but I'm hoping that the pile of unused stuff, combined with an inexpensive interface like the Tascam US-800 and a low cost DAW like reaper will get me going.

Not sure if I'm giving you enough information. Which shows you how little I know...

Probably after you get into the digital realm, most of the gear you have unfortunately will really " collect dust"..!..I had an analog studio from the late 80's/90's with decent gear that as digital became more and more popular/usable, end up either selling it/giving it away/ or still have some..Good luck...

Thanks snatchman,

I think I probably have a use for a fair amount of it. It might be the 238's that will collect dust. I'm inclined to get the US-800 and Reaper, and then play with everything to see what I'm most comfortable with. I'm sure you'll hear more from me.
