Abstract thinking doesn't elude me, simply because I know in art there are no rules. Therefore, I can appreciate abstractness in just about any media. I don't consider something to be "good" just because I feel it has to abide by "universal rules". And if I don't like it because it doesn't conform to my own personal set of rules that drive my opinion, that doesn't mean that someone else may not think it's good.
You are right, it doesn't. But it doesn't say anything about passing off something WITHOUT giving judgement either.
From Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary:
write-off 1: an elimination of items from books of an account 2: a reduction in book value of an item as by way of depreciation. 3: To take off the books: Cancel <write off a bad debt>
This means you have something on the books of account to begin with. In the case of a bad debt, you assumed at one point that you were going to collect it. Therefore, if you knew in advance that you weren't going to collect, you wouldn't record it on the books, and thus you would not have something to write-off in the first place.
In the context of the topic of this thread, to write off good music, you would have to know what it is you are writing off.. you would have to be at least exposed to it. You explain later that you applied the definition differently:
"Writing off. Dismissing without so much as a second thought. This is not only closed-minded, but idiotic. "
You used the term as if writing off meant not giving something an honest chance to begin with. Honestly, if you had just used the phrase under the conditions of the original definition, then I would at least be in half agreement on this whole debate.

I guess my issue is that... Regardless of personal tastes, you "generally" have to have SOME kind of baseline talent to make it in the music business. Every now and then someone squeaks by who is truly an anomaly. (I saw a pop singer sing the Star Spangled Banner last year at the MLB all star game, and it was awful. She sucked.
Even the people who are awful - who I could NEVER listen to in a million years - had something that I didn't. Whether it was determination, perseverance, talent, consistency, etc... Only Toker41 reserves the right to criticize, since he has written symphonies and sold lots of albums.
Did I mention he has perfect pitch?

I actually teach middle school during the day. It's May, and I guess after listening to 13-year-olds whine all day (for 9 months) about how everything sucks, I expect a little more from my evening. No biggie, but I would hope people here might have a better grasp on the subtleties of language.
Saying something "sucks" may mean you don't like it, but it is certainly not doing so in a respectful way. Like I said, it's common to hear it from my 8th graders. Just like saying something is "gay," but I guess you've gone that route too. Kids can say they don't like me, or they don't like the class, but if they tell me "You suck" or "This class is gay" then we have issues.
I happen to be a bit more precise in my language. It's my job.
And sorry for not bowing down to your symphonies and albums. Lots of people talk all kinds of crap online, and few of them ever back it up. Those with the credentials usually don't feel the need to defend them.
You challenge all kinds of people and choose to get defensive when someone calls you on it. I'm not challenging your opinions. Tons of people think tons of stuff I like is crap - doesn't bother me at all. I just think if you choose to express your opinions in a disrespectful manner, then you should't complain when someone calls you on it. Your attitude provokes people. I don't have a problem with what you say, but how you say it. You think Line 6 amps suck, fine. Don't be a prick about it. You think Mesa rocks? Great. Don't be a prick about it. I'd rather have a Fuchs or a Komet or a Bogner or a Rivera. I'll try not to be a prick about it.

Seeing that you are a teacher would explain why you didn't understand what you were reading. It also explains why you are so frustated, and why you feel you know everything. It was stated on the first post that no one was looking for an arguement, just wanted the chance to say what we DON'T like without a war of words with the norm, but there is always some asswipe on the beach that has to kick over the kids sand castle. Music is about expression and the freedom to express ones self in ones own way. If you think you need to change the way a preson express themself, then it is you that does not understand music. If you are bored try doing something alittle more productive with your time, and leave the ones having fun alone.

Yeah, I love threads like this because people get really bent out of shape when you dont like what they like. I started a thread one time asking if people thought that Jimi Hendrix was over-rated. Man, I nearly got hung by my b*lls by some of the folks on here. My opinion is, Hendrix doesnt suck by any means but, I think personally that his relevence to the music of today is waining. I think that the guitar rags and other artists have programmed guitar players over the years to think that they are not worthy if they dont worship Jimi as some guitar god. I love Jimi's music but the fact of the matter is Jimi really couldnt sing very well. A lot of his playing, as Eddie VH once put it is "fuzz, whah garbage" The meaning of most of his songs is so psychedelic that it is STUCK in the 60's.

I think that Hendrix didn't have to sing very well, although his voice timbre is awesome, because he had so much feeling and emotion. I think that Hendrix is no "perfectionist" but, using an analogy to illustrate, I consider Hendrix to be a musical Kandinsky or Picasso.
