The drop in the used market is due to the fucked economy. There are literally tons and tons of used guitars offered for sale every day by desperate folks trying to make the rent or car payment.

maybe they can all start a medical-marijuana dispense hut.... the new US Industry = REEFER, POT, WEED

my 2 cents...invest heavily in Munchie industry, example Dorito's, Popcorn, Chips of any kind, cookies, Capt N Crunch cereal...
was at GC today and they dont seem to be selling new ones cheaper, but the massive quantity of used ones is pretty abundant.
GC taking on the used market has done well. They really have priced it, and sell at CL prices on many items or better.
They have the edge of layaway and credit, so they might actually win this war with CL pricing.
I bought a used Ampeg cabinet from GC over CL, because I could test drive for 30days. Also 15months no interest.
Price was the same.
Like my son said people selling on CL will have to go lower, like $500 for the US Strats I think, if things dont turn around.
GC will do US used STrats $600, my brother just bought one. IF a person goes used HiWay One US , whats that worth? Less than an American Strat, so $450? $400?
CL is crazy, you place an ad around here and its on the second page in 6 hrs.

I had my 'quick reply' typed out on page 2, then figured I'd read page 3 before sending. I came to a similar conclusion:
I read this as 'signs of the times'. Lots of people are really struggling in this ruined economy, and are now forced to part with their *collectibles* for whatever they can get; thereby flooding the marketplace with deals to be had. Supply & demand, and it's a buyer's market. I say buy while you can, just wait until India and China really get bitten by the vintage/collectible audio gear bug. You'll be able to name your price.

I bought a Ampeg VT-40, just about the time I got active here (posted about it, Lt. Bob posted to my thread,) and I saw one on fleaBay, sold for $1,065 that summer. Now, I'd be lucky to get half that. But really, over a grand for a somewhat obscure (but cool-sounding) guitar amp is kinda nuts. It probably was never worth that kind of coin, really.

the one I sold is going to Spain. (supposedly) kind of cool...global sales might help raise prices.
I dont know, only thing i see driving the price up from global demand is the old Fullertons and same collectors stuff as here.
Fender is a global company and the India and Chineese can already buy Corona, CA new Strats, probably from GC China, right?
I'm not a collector, I guess the 1979 one i had was a FUllerton, paid $400 w'case brand new and it(one like the one I owned) is now on fleabay for $2500 to $3250ish.
I think the 2001 I just sold tromped the 79 as a player though, the rolled edge necks and satin finish are really well done, gorgeous necks, as I recall the 79 was kind of a clunker to play, the neck had that glossy finish I dont care for... ymmv.
