has any one tryed the Yamaha 01x ,help Newbie

Hi There,
I'm about to set up my first home recording experience.

I have been trying to get a feel for something out there, that will be user friendly and not need upgrading in a hurry.
I plan to start with my ASUS lap top and then buy a desk top and have both portable and home set up. I dont see myself needing to have more than 8-10 inputs for at least three years.
Questions i have are
1) is the above mixer a good start as an all in one package?, has any one try'd it?. How do the pre amps shape up?Is the sound card route ++++ a better option
2) My brother studying recording suggested pro tools but the opion polls i've read are leaning towards cubase. I just want to be able to create the best quality sound I can. Do both programs have mastering capabilties? I know this subject has been done to death, so my question is do they both have a high end finished quality result.
3) If my laptop doesnt have a fire wire input is this easy to get installed?
any help would be greatly appreciated.My laptop has P4 1.8,with hyper threading 40 gig hard drive and 512 ram

Well, first of all neither Cubase nor ProTools will give you high quality sound. They will however give you the choice of doing many, many things to the sound, be it for better or worse. Mastering is pretty much not-done on any software level with the standard plugins (eq, compression etc) that come with the sequencer. I'm not much of a mastering engineer so I'll leave that subject to someone else. To give you a quick answer: Cubase, because it's cheaper, and there are more plugins available for it.

Getting firewire installed is *I think* impossible. You could get a firewire card for your laptop but a USB device would be smarter.

If you are thinking of using the 01x as a mixer, that could be a way to go, using the laptop only for storage purposes, but remember that a software package like Cubase or Protools is basicly an entire 01x, minus the inputs and outputs. So if you want to mix in-the-box (laptop), any interface with decent preamps will do. You don't need a mixer for that. It's your choice really. Mixers have advantages, like quick hands-on handling, not crashing and consistent quality, but in-the-box mixing has advantages too, like more proccessing options (plugins), more and more detailed control and the option to upgrade hardware part for part if you wish.

What would you suggest for a something with good pre amps, and is the sound card a seperate item? or is the audio to digital interface all in one piece.

These days there are lots of products that offer preamps and digital to analogue conversion in one, but origionally, the soundcard is used for the convertion only. Products like the Presonus Firebox and Firepod, Digidesign M-Box(2), Tascam US122 and many more, are preamps + convertors in one package, connectable through firewire or usb. Most would be a good choice. M-Audio products have one big plus if you ask me: you can run ProTools on them. Once again, not because it's such a better program than others, but it's good to learn as many programs as you can, if only to see what fits you best. The Presonus Firebox/pod are very well respected here, while the Mbox and tascam get a little less talk.

On the software thing, perhaps I can give an example. I study a music production education. Personally, I like to use Cubase, but some of my fellow students are Logic lovers, or ProTools freaks. Some use Ableton Live for everything, others are Sonar, Digital Performer or Windows Sound Recorder specialists. Arguments are no longer serious, although a "Cubase all the way!" scream sometimes still escapes my mouth. Truth is, it doesn't really matter.

I have found out that my asus a200h has a IEEE 1394 fire wire port.
would this be sufficient for my purposes? :D

Would the IEEE 1394 port be M audio compatable and presonus ? :confused:

These products come with soft ware are you paying for the soft ware or the hard ware? Is there an option to just buy the hard ware and get better quality pre amps etc . Or do these manufactuers have a deal with cubase?

Yes, that port will work fine.

You don't get software with these products. You have to buy it seperately. You are not resticted to Cubase, many products will work.

Hi,
after much deliberation i'm going with the above, gonna get a handel on it and then upgrade if ness.
Just a few questions.
1) my fire wire is 4 pin . the M audio site sais adapters and AC adapter power is fine...has any one had probs????
2) I'm in australia ao the current here is different would this pose any probs??or just a different adapter.

Yes! I can be a problem. I live in there Netherlands where the voltage is 230 at 50 hz. I cannot use products from america because the voltage there is 110 at 60hz. The voltage can be converted but the hz cannot, and therefor any digital device will not work or even be harmed when connected. I'm sure how it is with every single product ofcourse, but it's never recommended. Personally, I wouldn't want the risk.

On a side note: you can use things that are not powered by a wall outlet, like USB powered devices or condensor mics.
 
One word of warning regarding the 01x, you have to have a compatable TI based firewire interface. Look at the mLan forums for details which ones work well. I know for a fact that all adaptec interfaces are OK so you may need to get a PC card for your laptop. I set up a i88x (the rack version of the 01x) for a friend last summer and it was pain in the ass to get going but in the end, works very well. Yamaha tech support is very good so make sure you call them if you need help.

Since Yamaha bought Steinberg, cubase will be a good choice for the 01x and they have been working on the studio connections initiative since the sale so I would expect very tight integration with Yamaha hardware
 
Thanks for the warning on U.S. compatability, that will put my ebay trigger happy fingers to rest for a while.
And the o1x does sound like a lot of trouble with pci cards etc
My lap top has Usb 2 inputs are there any interfaces with usb2 connections or are they all usb1 ( I haven't found any with usb2 so far I know usb1 will be fine but is more limited than fire wire.)

So I guess what I would like to ask is
1)are there any new usb2 interfaces out there?

2)forgetting the U.S. power issues,what would your opinion be on something in the $4-$500 range with good pre amps, pro tools and cubase and midi compatablilty.As well as being something that could be daisy chained and allow for expasion? (or is upgrade inevitable)

3)what about something in the $1-1200 price range and would this range give me better pre amp sound etc or just more ins and outs?

4) My Lap top is an Asus a200h,p4 2.8ghz, 512 ram ,40 gig hard drive,5 x usb2 ins and 1 x 4 pin fire wire in , with pci slot.(I believe the pci chip set is SIS m650-651-740, I'm not sure if this only relates to the pci card or the P4 chip.I seem to remember reading some where that the Asus a200h has texas instrament settings, a bit lost here on what all this means.)
Eventually I want to get a good PC designed for recording but want to get a feel for it on the laptop and have the portable option.
