Very nice work guys, listened to this a few times over the past couple days. The boy-girl vox really work well on this and it has a nice languid feel to it, though I go out of my way to find places like the one you describe in the song. Like the idea of adding something in verse 2, but levels, mix, and over all song sound great to me as is.

I was just listening to some Pearls before Swine - Tom Rapp & Co. could've done this.
FTG, now that's a voice you can duet with. Makes it clear why mine is muted.
Also reminds me of Nick Cave's occassional duets with women.

Ace, thanks a lot for your kind words ray. I don't know too many of the names you mentioned, but I always loved that Nick Cave & Kylie duet on 'Where The Wild Roses Grow'. I mentioned the band Low to Frits when I was initially explaining what I pictured in my head - I also love those tight male/female country harmonies with the likes of Gram/Emmylou and early Whiskeytown stuff. Man, I'd love half of Gram's voice - but Frit's vocals fitted in perfectly.

Yeah, exactly. The payoff in this one is in the chorus harmony. When the first chorus returns to the second verse, the repetiveness of the chord structure and harmony are a little...repetitive. What would relieve it a bit would be an added instrument on the second verse - something kind of distinctive. I think the mellotron that you added to the second chorus would keep the chorus the high energy point of the song even if you added an instrument on the second verse.

Lovely gloomy tuneage. It doesn't sound hippy to me. It sounds newage stoner.

Yeah, that definitely taps into a concern I had - I said to Trish that I was worried that the second half of the song basically mirrored the first. That's why we only brought her refrain in on the second bridge - to add a little variation there. I did think about changing the arrangement for the second verse, but it's a trick I always pull and I was worried that maybe I was falling into a bit of a routine when it came to writing. It's come up in a few comments, I'll have a think about it - I may have an idea that will work.

Excellent, I was hoping you'd hear it fleet - glad it worked for you. On the subject of places in the song, I've got to say that the views are those of a character rather than my own too. Especially living in a city suburb, I love getting away from it.

Glad all the mix worked for you - I've been really happy with the bass on the last two songs posted here. Seem to have stumbled on a good working formula for it somehow. As I said above, some variation is probably needed - I thought I might have got away with it until dobro and subsequent posts picked up on that. I gotta say now that you mention Low I can see a little similarity (in a positive way). Also if you like the Gram/Emmylou stuff, I think you'd also like the second album by Doug Dillard and Gene Clark Through the Morning, Through the Night (though you mighta heard it). Both Dillard & Clark albums rule, but the second one has more lush instrumentation and Dillard's girlfriend came on board as a harmony vocalist and they hit those Grievous Angel kinda harmonies. Chris Hillman and Sneaky Pete from Burrito Bros. play on it too.

I did the reverse - growing up in the country and then moving to the city as an adult. As much as I like amenities such as more than three buses a day and shops near, I do miss it. One day...

I'll have a final think about some changes in that 2nd verse when I get chance before I put this one to bed. As I say, I thought about it first time round, but I'm increasingly conscious that there are a few habits/routines I'm starting to fall into on all my songs. I thought that by keeping it the same, I'd be doing it a little different this time around - even though that doesn't sound like it makes any sense. I've got a couple of subtle changes in mind to try. Cheers man
