Roel

That SMART guy.
My first demo recording... It's a fast mix, still needs alot of adjusting. Kick, snare and toms have too much low and are too loud. This was the first time I mixed real drums on my monitors... I'll redo the mix this weekend, and try posting it next week.

This demo was recorded in 3 hours. This includes, setting up ALL material, recorder, mics, amps, drums... Little soundcheck, and recording 3 songs in too many takes.

Both guitars were recorded using the speaker simulated out of a Marshall JMP1. Bass was recorded using the direct out (balanced. Way to nice) of the ampeq. All straight into the VS1880.

Drums mics, also straight in VS:
Kick: old Sennheiser. Number was worn off...
Snare: SM57
Tom and floor tom: Sennheiser MZH504
Overhead: AKG C3000B, on the left side of the drummer, pointing slightly down to get the hihat.

All mics were borrowed, except for the AKG. I ran the tom to a Behringer mixer, because one of my xlr-stereo jack adapter cables was broken. :D Didn't have the time or tools to fix it.
We also borrowed an AKG SE300B small diaphragm condensor. I wanted to compare it with the C3000 for overhead, but forgot it in the rush. Would this have been better?

The overhead on the side of the drums was an idea of the guy we borrowed the mics from. Is this a good idea? He's alot more experienced, so we just took his word. I adjusted the position, and got a decent sound, I think... I also played a bit with the kick, but didn't get alot of kick from it... Snare was a bit of a problem. There was no way to get it miced without bothering the drummer. He really needs to adjust his setup.

Well... Enjoy. It's my previous band. Vocals still need to be tracked. But it's still worth listening. And I think it sounds pretty good to be trakced in 3 hours... Comments welcome, ofcourse.

Ooops... Forgot to give a link... It's at www.freedrive.com

There are some pops and such in the recording you want to fix. It sounds pretty decent otherwise. The drums actually sound pretty good. I like the snare sound alot. Post it up when the vocals are done. I think some Boy Sets Fire emo-core style vocals would sound awesome on this tune.

I like it

That you on guitar?, that's so much different than your others it's hard to believe its you. I'll leave any mixing criticism out of this one till you finish it. Nice tight sound with the band. It's not hardcore though, if it had vocals it would be pop (Hard) rock style around here anyway. It seems to have a flavor of 70's, 80's and 90's rock/metal all in one song....COOL

nice tune, roel,

I love the aggresiveness of it, and that was accentuated by the mid scoop on the guitars.

Nice power.

keep it up

Thanks for the good comment! I'll pass it through...

I worked on it some more... Compression on the bassdrum, much tighter now. Decreased around 400 HZ on snare and toms, drums sound way better now.

Also worked on the guitar a little. Increased around 1.6K on the lead, and decreased it on the other, they fit better now. Lead comes out a little more.

Torpid, it's not me on the guitars. I started the band together with the bassplayer and a drummer. Drummer left, new drummer, singer came in, second guitarplayer (dude that plays lead now), I left, new drummer, new second guitarplayer. That's the bands history in short. :D I played with them untill 2 years ago. Stopped because I was bored at the rehearsals. They were writing the songs, and when they finished it, I played it right from the 2nd time, just by watching the other guitarplayers fingers. (I didn't write songs, me and the bassist agreed that because I tended to play to complicated stuff. We already did that in our other band. hehe...)

They really kick ass nowadays. I still think I've influenced they're style in a way. The octave-leads wre introduced by me.

70's, 80's and 90's rock/metal all in one song.... Nice comment... :D

The vocals are kinda-screamy. Will record them as soon as possible, but the signer is in the middle of his examinations at the moment...
New version on monday...

Ok... New mix is on. Same location. WAY better sounding... Name is CastDown3.mp3... (different song, but the sound is about the same... Still no vocals.)

Kinda proud of the mix... My 3 hour recording session, and about 6 hours of mixing last week sound actually better as the 7" they recorded in a project studio last year. (That's what the guitarplayer told me.)

There are still some things that need to be changed. Overhead is a little loud a few places. Changes on this version: I added compression on the kick and snare, and changed EQ on all tracks.

Jake, I never really heard Boysetsfire before, but it's about the same vocalstyle. And it's emocore... Indeed. (I haven't listened to this kinda music since about 4 years... Occasionally I hear some when visiting friends.) And guess what the bassplayer brought as a reference when he came over to help me mixing... Boysetsfire!

It still needs work. I would like to have the 2nd guitar a little more defined, and the level needs to be a little louder, altough the meters on the VS1880 were almost clipping. Also, drums and guitar sound to much appart. Help me out. (It sounds pretty decent. I'm allready very happy, but anything better is better :D )

Sounds KILLER. Love it. Boy sets fire are a awesome, love that stuff. Can't wait to hear this with vocals. Whats the band's name?
I'd love to hear more of their stuff.

you lost that 70's 80's part :D

Great mix, sounds like a totaly different song. did you do some rearranging? or does it just sound like it. everythings nice, clean and audible. the guitar tone sounds much better, and the drums are awesome. That drummer Kicks Ass BTW.

there's only one thing in the mix, and I can't quite place it. it's either at the high end of the drums, like the crash symbol, or the low end like the kick, or maybe just a clash between them. Something in there bothers my ears a little. I wish I could describe it better, but it sounds "feels" like an extreme high, or extreme low EQ setting, something in the inaudible range set to high. to describe what I hear "feel", it's something like my ears want to pop, I get it when I mix my own music too. maybe I'm just listening too hard. I can't help it that drummer makes you really listen. esp. his symbol technique.

Jake, More on the band can be found here.

Torpid, I know exactly what you mean. But I thought it was me just being allergic again. :D And then I thought it was the guitars... They also don't fit together with the drums somehow. Gonna try fixing that this weekend...
