I have 7 tracks recorded. My hard drive sometimes skips toward the end of the song. If i save the scene and shut down, it's fine for a couple plays, then starts doing it again. Is there a way to defrag this unit? How do you get rid of old takes, or does it record over your old takes, making defrag unneeded. My drive seems to make that clank sound sometimes, like there's a small marble loose inside it. This happens occasionally. Should I just go buy my 60 gig drive right now? is there something wrong with my drive, or am I doing something wrong myself? have i save a mix scene that has jumps forward or something? b That can't be, cause I just played it all the way through just now without a skip.

Please help.

Shit, I just turned up my 7th and 8th track, and now it is skipping like hell. I can see the access hard drive light on solid when it skips. It is definitely the hard drive. When the access light is simply just blinking occasionally, it does fine. Don't tell me this thing is having trouble playing 7 tracks at once (mono tracks). Is it trying to access all the takes I have done too? I did many old takes until I got the parts right.

Please don'ttell me the hard drive is fried.

Ok....take a deep breath. :)

It definitley sounds like "something" is wrong with the hard drive. Go to fostex's website and email them...they are usually very good about firing off a reply right away.

If you were planning on replacing the drive anyway, you might as well try it and see if that helps. The unit has no problem playing back all 16 tracks and fostex's file system makes defrag unneccesary. Good luck with this...

Thanks for the comfort, it helps.

yes, my hard drive is bad. The classic sound of a loose marble inside, and the song will hang and skip over the same section. Digital Pro audio said that I could go a head and replace it with another drive, send the bad one back to him, and he would send me a replacement.

Now the big question: am I limited to only the drive models that Fostex lists as compatible? I wish i could put a 7200 RPM in it, but none of the compatible drives are that speed. I wish I could just hit the computer shop locally and grab a good deal on a drive, but i am afraid I won't find one on the list from Fostex. I get the feeling that almost any ATA 33 IDE hard drive would work, but I guess there's no way to know. I am definitely going for a 40 gig or larger.

Any drive suggestions would be welcome.

My hard drive does make a slight clunk approx every second , like a little "dink".
Is this not normal ??
It has not skipped yet .

Jeff, I think all that Fostex's list means is that those are only the specific ones that they have tested with the machine. I think, but don't know for sure, that in theory, any name-sih brand 5400 drive should work. I don't think that a 7200 would provide much noticeable improvement for what the machine does, and would most likely get way too hot.
