hard drive dying?

i wasnt sure where else to post this but here it is....

i believe mt harddrive is dying... sometimes when i boot up it makes a little weird beep and then the bios fails to find it, (although i usually reboot and it will then find it)... so would anyone know if it is

a> harddrive taking its last breaths
b. bad wire ?
c. motherboard/controller?

i assume its <A> because both my drives are on the same wire (i know thats not the best setup but hey)

oh and this is my main audio scratch and storage drive so if i lose it i lose a lot - all archives are backed up, but new stuff is added too frequently to back up every week.

that sounds like your hard drive is dying. Back crap up as quick as you can.
 
I stronly advise you not to do anything to the MBR if you don't have to. The BIOS would find the drive no matter what was in the MBR. If it simply isn't seeing the drive at all the problem must be hardware related.

Make sure your IDE and power cables haven't come lose at all. Also, try running the problem drive on it's own set to "master." It could also be a power supply issue. Sorry, can't help more than that.
 
Just to state the important of the point already states many times here: back that stuff up asap! Then buy a new harddisk. The cheapest ones are still pretty big and should cost no more than 40 or 50 bucks.
 
But if hard drives die.......that means they must get born. Which mean they must have parents. Which in turn means that hard drives must be able to sexually reproduce......and now i've gone and confused myself.

A chip on my shoulder? That means i have a problem with somebody/someone.

o.k. all data is backed up now i need a new harddrive... here is the dilemma...
do i get a EIDE (PATA) 120 w/ 100mb transfer rate for $60 or
SATA 120 w/ controller and adaptors w/ 150mb rate for $100

and does anyone know the transfer rate for audio of mathimatical considerations?

From what I've read on the net, I don't think you're going to get a huge performance advantage from ATA100 (which I assume you are talking about) to the SATA's with 150 mb rates. Read the same about 2mb vs. 8mb cache as well, but I went with ATA100, 8 mb cache drives and am happy with the performance I'm getting.
