I don't seem to see a forum dealing with standalone hard disk recorders. I was wondering whther to put my money into one of those (ie like Zoom MRS1044 Multi-Track Digital Workstation with FX, (or better)). Whare do I go if I want to get feedback about recording with these machines? TIA. Rich.

Hey Richard, there should be some past threads to search through in the computer and soundcard forum about HD recorders and comparisons/opinions against computer DAW recording. They're really not that much different in concept. Each has it's own advantages/disadvantages and it's really up to your needs which will better suit you. Portability and convenience are very strong points of HD recorders. You can pretty much take them anywhere, plug them into your audio setup and start recording. Many come with editing software and CD burners built in. My DAW doesn't need to be portable and I'm partial to having ultimate control over my hardware, switching cards, HDs, processors, etc. Upgradability and versatility are probably the strongest points of a computer setup (if you're comfortable working on your hardware). There are so many choices and so many scenarios, just be sure to thoroughly do your research before committing to something. :D

Yo Ricardo 001 -- six less than James Bond!

Well, which one to choose? A DAW, like the Yamaha 4416 or 2816 or the cheaper 16G will do a good job at home; you can lift them up and take them away to do work. Basically, the contained DAW is very similar to a PC program but probably has some limitations.

You can research here to pick up countless threads discussing either type; or, use the forum for PC based programs, etc.

Much depends on what is it you want to accomplish? How good do you want editing capabilities? CDR/Rw burning? Special effects?

You can't get "everything" in a single box but, you can get what you need if you research, listen, audition before you buy.

I would guess most folks like what they buy because they have bought it? Not necessarily true but logical. I like my 2816; I enjoy its sound production qualities and the challenge of learning it in spite of awkward manual organization.

So, look, listen, read, ask, and take a plunge.
