I just got 5 panels of 20mm x 0.606m x 1.212m Owens-Corning fiberglass material. It's the type with one side already "painted" white with pores (think cheese). I record drums in the living room, which is connected to the rest of the house (kitchen, dining area) without any walls or partitions.

I think most of the reverb happens because the room is too open, so my plan is to HANG panels to the drums' front, left and right sides where it is open (there's a wall with a window in its immediate back), the panels being "pseudo acoustic walls" that should block off enough reverberations during recording. Yes, these panels will just be suspended in mid-air, only held by cables hooked from the ceiling. They will be removed and stored when not recording.

I'll also hang a panel or two on the ceiling above the drums, and attach some on the wall at the back.

My question is, will this work at all? If so, what should I use to hang the panels? I'm not too keen on making frames - it's too much trouble (plus the things will get heavy).

Thanks in advance!

What you have in mind should help, it wont give you any real isolation but it should help cut down on at least some reflections. For hanging, reinforce a couple of corners on your panels with a layer or two of duck tape, you only need to cover a couple or three inches, this just prevents thr chance of ripping out the corner. Punch a hole about 2 inches in from the edges (an ice pick is ideal but a pencil, screwdriver, or nail should work fine) and hang your panels with mono filiment fishing line (20 lb. Stren works great) or other string, mason twine works well but tends to fray on the ends. Depending on your celing, cup hooks or eye hooks will likely serve to finish off this project and are easily installed. Leave the line (for hanging) extra long so you will have some extra to experiment with untill you find the hight which works best. You might want to cover the unfinished side of your panels, a fast and easy way to do this is to use spray adheasive and loose cloth (burlap) or an old blanket cut to fit. So much for my DIY, someone else may have a better idea, anyway I hope this helps.

Hi Dani, thanks for the tips! Was able to consider some aspects I didn't think of before. I'll do this project sometime this weekend, and hopefully I get good results.

this is nice,
i started doing some basic accoustic treatment in my bedroom, and was thinking about the same thing,
right now i built me some very light 'panels' or fake walls of 2 meters high, 1 meter wide, i got 4 of them so i can build a vocal booth with it, or put it around my drumkit.
they just block the reflections of the room, they're no basstraps,
so i'm thinking of building me some basstraps that i can hang on the wall, like you described,
and now i wonder; can you take some pictures of your "thing" when its ready? would be great !
i'm gonna clean up the mess in here and then i'm gonna take some pics, i'm gonna start haunting the 'studiodesign' section for a while :D
