I aksed this in a different forum already, but this is probably the better place to ask this question.

I am going to hang my monitors from the ceiling. I have already figured out how to make an "anchor" on the ceiling that can hold a lot of weight.

My question what do I hang it with. Chains are out, they rattle. This leaves me with the option of some sort if wire. I thought of piano wire like the SPFX guys use to hang people in the air. I am wondering if there is a simple hardware store solution that studio builders use?

I think you are talking about airline cable. Piano wire is only good for strangling persons.

That macrame thing I suggested Is a good solution why did you assume It didnt work. Ive seen it used a few times on speakers twice the size of normal near field monitors.

I didn't assume it wouldn't work. I made both posts within a few minutes of each other.

Piano wire is also good for creating musical vibrations on a (cough) Piano :)

I would use steel cables, they can be purchased fairly cheap from an airplane part place or a boating store. A lot of smaller boats use a cable between the rudder and the steering wheel, and these cables are typically 20' long and about 30 bucks. Chop it into smaller pieces using a really good wire cutter, and you can clamp the cables onto the ceiling and the speaker. They'd be quite ugly however.

Another option is to mount on a ceiling joist a metal threaded pipe flange, then caulk the threads, and screw in a section of pipe thats the length of your choosing. Then, screw the same type of threaded pipe flange to your monitors, then chaulk the threads, then screw the monitor to the pipe. If the speakers aren't too heavy, this will work well if the screws you use are long/strong enough. And you obviously don't need 3" diameter pipe for a pair of speakers with a 5" woofer :)

Basically I'm describing speaker stands that mount on the ceiling instead of the floor. I've seen them done with ordinary materials and they can look high tech if you paint them with Krylon or similar "cover anything" kinda of paint. Just realize they are not going to be easy to remove after you chaulk them, however the chaulking prevents bass frequencies from loosening them up and in turn causing your speakers to slowly rotate counter clockwise.

Of corse the vibrations from using the steel and cable will shake what it is hung upon causing damage and resonence that you could have avoided if you use the macrame plant holders.
