Two channels of Hamptone JFET is within the budget to go with some Josephson C42s..... Anybody have experience with this combo or with this pre for OH duty? I'm using an RNP/RNC for the job now.

Hamptones have a nice character going, but it is never overbearing. good idea, I say. The josephsons sound a lot like the km84i, and would mate well with that box.

Thanks - for rock/pop would you reach for it before the DAV BG1?

Bump - I want to upgrade my OH pres and I'm torn between the DAV BG1 and the Hamptone JFET. I like the build quality of the hamptone but would perhaps the color be too strong for Rock/Pop OH? Big Ray says no... what do you think? Are transformer balanced pres generally not as useful for OH?

I know it depends. I don't have the resources to try any of these pres. If you take a listen to the tunes linked in my sig, you can hear the RNP in action. Am I looking at a big step up in quality?

yes, either the DAV or the Hamptone would be a massive step up in quality.

The RNP sounds like hell to me.

As far as Rock recording, I cant answer that specifically, other than to say that David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler grabbed some DAVs recently for their own ventures.

I can tell you that I have used both on Jazz, Classical, and World Music with great results. IMHO, the DAV would be more versatile, as colored pres tend to be less useful as all rounders(in my experience)..but either would be great.

If you want info on how to order either of them for the best price, just shoot me a PM.

let me rephrase...

the RNP, when compared to DAV, Hamptone, Electronaut, Millennia, Apogee, Hardy, Vintech, Sebatron, and others...sounds like hell. on acoustic sources.
Maybe it is fine for rock/louder applications?? I am just judging on what is familiar to me.

Thats expected though.

Can't comment yet, but I'll write a full review of my impressions of the Hamptone HJFP2 when I get some cables on thursday. Though I won't be using it on OH yet.

I can say that Scott is a great guy and is very enthusiastic about his product and will do whatever he can to make you happy.

Thanks everybody for your comments - I'm leaning toward the DAV but I can't find enough subjective information anywhere.

Did you get it assembled or build it from the kit

Well... I sold my FMR RNP over a year ago. I liked it somewhat. I thought it fit neatly in as far as sonics with the few other mic pres in its price range that I've used. I thought it a fairly interesting texture on acoustic guitar.

I am looking at purchasing it assembled. It's a steal for the price. They both are.

I got mine assembled, and he got it to me with very quickly because the current batch of assebled pre amps were in the burn-in phase. Turns out I don't have access to my musicians untill saturday and sunday, so I will have to hold out untill then. But what I can say is that it sounds much more thick and airy than both the digi002 and the mbox pres. Both those sound constricted by comparison.

It's the BG1 and the Josephson C42MP FTW.

Thanks guys.

Wise choice!

Those josephsons sound very similar to the old KM84s. Youll love them im sure!

I have both versions of the hamptones and they sound fabutastic! And yes, i did use them on overheads for rock. Great pre's and highly recommended.
