What Pro Tools *****?
Here's a little funny and crazy song I recorded for the 50th Episode of our podcast. If you play Xbox or Halo you'll get it. If not, please enjoy the composition! :D

Please listen and tell me what you think of the quality of the mix, the tone of the guitar (am I mic'ing my amp ok?), and the overall quality of the recording.

DOWNLOAD HERE:

If you care, I recorded this with:

Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 with a Sound Blaster Live! card. I run one mic and track at a time into a Radio Shack Realistc Mixer which I use to control the input volume. I then send the signal to the 1/8" mic-in of the Sound Blaster Live! Card. It's absolutely crude, I know! Working on getting a Firepod or Mbx Pro 2 this month. Other equipment includes a Shure SM58, an original 60s Blackface Twin, original TS-808 Tubescreamer, Vox Wah, and a Strat Plus with Texas Special Pick Ups.

Thats pretty funny shit. Drums sound pretty good to me and over all i like the mix. The vocoder vox could maybe come up a bit.

The only shortcoming in your recording/signal chain is the Soundblaster card. I used one for a year or so until I could afford to upgrade.
The mix is pretty good though the chrashing chords seem a little loud & close to throwing everything else out as well as into distortion.
Sounds good, fairly amusing too.
I use roughly the same version of Cakewalk as you - for upgrade, VST wrapper & plug in info I left some links at the cakewalk forum of this BBS go to the cakewalk section & run a search for Pro Audio & the thread should turn up. Found it :

Once or if you get the VST wrapper try the free VSTs at voxengo as well as the ones in the link.

I failed to mention that I am using drum loops! Those drums were not recorded live by ME. They are Beta Monkey drum loops.

And, thanks!

Thanks for that Cakewalk link! Some great free plug-ins! Whoa!

If you've found, downloaded & installed the VST wrapper go to this site
http://www.voxengo.com/downloads/
& download the VSTs marked as free. The Boogie amp one is rrrreally very good (it has amp & mic sims included) - the others I've not played with as yet.
To add a VST effect you click in the track box, select VST wrapper then a dialogue should pop up with all your installed VSTs & you select one. The double click VST in the track box to pull up the screen for the effect & tweak away.
DO read the installation instructions on the voxengo site (beside the download).

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out later this week! Thanks!

Seeing as I can't create a NEW THREAD, I'm gonna just post this song in this thread! ARRGH!:

Ok, I think this is my final mix, but I am not sure. If you guys could give it a listen and please let me know if I am overlooking anything. I am way too close to this and am sick of hearing it! Thanks in advance!

Recorded with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 through a Soundblaster Live! Card. Drums courtesy of Beta Monkey Drum Loops...

The chiming guitar sound is terrific.
The vocals need to cut through a bit better. I don't mean so that they float on top it's just that occasionally they get buried - esp in the chorus.
Have a read at this page:
http://www.recordinginstitute.com/R2KREQ/excomp.htm
& perhaps give the motown exciter technique a burl (thanks to rami for bringing it to my attention).Otherwise just even out the vocals a little.
Good song, good sound - bass MAY need some definiton but I'm using head phones so it may be they are at fault.
Nice guitar sound on the outro - the vocal jumps out a bit at one stage.
I like the lo-fi vocal effect you used at one stage - is that essentially just the b/vocal?

Hey, thanks for the tip! I'll try that Motown method with the EQ. Thank you!
