im recording a guitarist at the moment , i probly made him sound like satan , but i swear its not that bad .. Basically we're recording an accoustic guitar actually ..im micing it up with a rode NT1 .. The problem is he seems to play through the strings on his "heavy" bits... Is there a way i can control this ... the result im trying to kill is a really harsh scratchy sound....
Also anyone got any good suggestions for micing up an acoustic guitar ????
Cheers all ..

first off, move the mic around!!
sounds like you're miking either in front of the sound hole or back by the bridge. you might try miking closer towards the 12th fret and a little farther away from the guitar itself. also try moving the elevation of the mic (height from floor)either up or down a little. plug one ear and move around listening to the instruments sweet spots. it looks really strange but can help in determining mic placement.
hey, experiment!

EQ, EQ, EQ. I completely understand your problem. I play rock-a-billy and an acoustic is a must for that driving rythmic back beat. And trying to get on tape and sometimes trough the PA what I hear from the guitar fustrates me to no end. Using a good mic and a multibamd Eq goes a long way to improving the sound. Also like the other guys said, mic placement will change the tone and level. This may sound a little strange, but I don't like recording acuostic with brand new strings. The brightness of new strings seems to transfer to tape as too much treble and distorts in highs or makes a vintage Gibson Jumbo sound like a plastic cowboy guitar. Good luck. Share any improvments you find with us . THANKs

hey coops , not me im recording , but i do agree , i definetly need some... Any other cool ideas anyone ?? Elevation seemed to work, i moved up the neck a bit and elevated about 800mm , not much , but it seemed to make a difference.. bt still it sometimes cuts through.. how about gates , could this stop this?? anyway ill keep trying !!!
