About the only criteria I aim for is smoothness of tuning action - I hate some of these tuners that waver all over the place! The best one I've come across in this regard is the AKAI T1. It's also true bypass and in (muting) guitar pedal form, so great for a pedalboard.
Tuning is via 3 LEDs, i.e., flat/in tune/sharp along with note name indication. Auto OFF saves your battery. Built in mic, of course.
I lost my first one and replaced it immediately with the same one.
