Hello There,

I am trying to mix a song using a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 into my PC and using Ableton Live 9 Suite as the DAW.
I have some electric guitar parts and i am using Guitar Rig as a plugin to get the tones.
However the tones that i am getting through the presets are horrible. I am not being able to understand which amp to put where as these digital sounds look so different from the normal pedalboard and amplifier setup that i use for live.

Can anyone please help me by giving some tips about how to get a decent guitar tone(distorted/clean) from the Guitar Rig Plugin??

Thanks
Shounak

If you're not satisfied with the tones you're getting with the amp simulator, you should try sticking a mic in front of your amp. I find that plugins can for some purposes deliver decent clean sounds. But an amp always sounds, and feels, better.

Hey thanks dainbramage...But sticking a mic would mean i need a soundproof space and a good mic...both of these are not accessible to me right now...Mic i can get but i cant sound proof my room right now....Do u have any other suggestions??

You can get great results with an SM57 mic. They're pretty cheap and they're all over the used market.

But have a look at the plugin S-Gear 2 by Scuffham amps. It sounds better than Guitar Rig in my opinion.

Hey

While Guitar Rig is not the best plugin out there for clean/jazzy tones, I find it hard for anyone to say that the presets are horrible. I say this, because I have the same setup as you. Guitar>>2i2>>Ableton>>Guitar Rig

What guitar are you using ? As a control, why don't you try with another guitar and notice the difference. Or you could use a DI box and see if that makes a difference.

On a side note, great to see another Indian here !

How did you record your guitar, did you plug it into the 2i2?
I've read that it isn't the best sound card for guitars, because it can't deal with the high gain of some instruments and it starts distorting at a relatively low input level.
Are the "clean" tracks fine?

Hi,

I finally got a couple of decent distortion and clean tones from the setup. I understood that one has to do quite a bit of tweaking with the amps and cabinets to get an OK sound.
I use a Les Paul Studio with the setup. I will try to get some other guitar to see how it sounds..

And yes...its great to find another Indian here..Where are you from?

Thanks

Hi,
I recorded my guitar directly through the Scarlet 2i2. In my knowledge, the only other way to record guitars would be to use an amplifier and then mic it up, which is not feasible for me right now. The clean tones are sounding OK...nothing spectacular....but there is no distortion in the clean tones. Please suggest some other methods of getting a good guitar tone if you know..

Thanks

Yours is fine if the files are fine ;-)
I can't recall where I read it but there was this forum where some users where complaining and others wheren't so I guess it depends on the single instrument (some have higher output levels).
I also have a 2i2 but only use it for mics.
Having a Zoom h4n I would probably use it if I played an electric instrument *and* the 2i2 wasn't up to scratch (zoom's pres are consumer-grade). It also has built-in effects, if you're the plug-play-and-forget kinda guy.

Apart from that, really anything with a Hi-Z (high impedance) input, then it depends on budget.

ah there it is!
I don't know if it's ok to post a link to a competing forum, so I'll just say that's on the "equipment b*tches" forum & you can google "Focusrite Scarlett clipping problems", first result.

I have a Studio LP, a Focusrite 6i6 and guitar rig 5. I just did a recording and used the Clean 800 and the Heavy 800 presets. They sound pretty good for the type of song I did.

Its not hard to build your own rig. It's just drag and drop. I usually start with a compressor, may be a screamer then an amp and some reverb. Just keep it simple.

I live in Mumbai. Play bass and a bit of guitar as well.

Agree with Mogo's advice. Guitar Rig is a great tool to customize your sound. Try to build your own setup using the different pedals and chains. You can replicate popular combinations for the Les Paul on GR.

One piece of advice since you're using Ableton. The EQ8 plugin in Ableton Suite is amazing and I've found better results eqing entirely on ableton. Just get a good noise-free tone from GR and eq on Ableton. Trust me on this !

The Scarlett doesnt have alot of headroom- it almost clips as soon as you plug in a guitar. Should try DI box...

I find the sound from these programs quite substandard to the real thing. In my case I have use them because I can not afford the gear needed for recording. It is a good alternative if you are on a small budget. :)
