Guitar Sounds Dull

hi.

i've been playing my current guitar for several years without any problems, and the last time i changed the strings, i noticed that they weren't ringing out for as long as they used to. some of the strings sound dull (low e, and d in particular) as if my sleeve is resting on them (but i assure you, it isn't...i've torn it off as an extra precaution).

I changed the strings again this week and noticed the exact same thing. the guitar sounds dull and weak.

any solutions/suggestions?

What kind of guitar do you have? What kind of strings? Ever thought about changing the pickups?

Those are some things to look into.
 
Maybe it just needs a good cleaning. Sometimes, a lot of crud will build up on the fingerboard next to the frets. To clean it out, I use a toothbrush with soap and water.
 
i cleaned it thoroughly... that seemed to work

Just a thought, the scourge of guitarists, hearing loss. I have really damaged my hearing starting with military training about 40 years ago, then a lifetime of engineering shops and loud music.

You might want to get your ears checked out next time you are at your Doctor.

With the punishment that we give our ears goes the ears' natural defence, making more wax, which causes a roll off in hearing.
Food for thought.
 
possibly, if you used a different gauged strings, this could be effecting the sound... the truss on the kneck is adjusted for a certain gauge of strings, cause different gauges put different amounts of pressure on teh kneck........ changing teh gauge could cause the kneck to bend and warp..... so that might need adjusting...

and if you didn't change gauges, then sometimes you can put them off in a wrong way... if you take them all off at once and then put the new ones on, this can cause to quick of a dramatic change of pressure on the kneck...

just some thigns that could possibly be the problem
