Hello!

I might have changed my mind a little and I am at the moment thinking of MAYBE buying a smaller firewire interface just to get startet as quick as possible... Among those I look at is M-audio Firewire 1814 and the Firewire 410. But I have a question...

Is it possible to, on the Firewire 1814, connect two mics (voice) to the Neutik combo XLR inputs, AND AT THE SAME TIME connect one or more guitars thru the ADDITIONAL 1/4" Line level inputs (there are 8 of them in total) on the back of the unit and record, lets say 2 guitars and 2 vocals at the same time, and have each of them on their own channel in Cubase SX?

Yes that will work just fine just make sure that Cubase has all of your inputs activated..

so in other words... it is possible to, for exemple on the FIREWIRE 1814 to record 2 mics and 6 additional guitars at the same time...?

Yes, you can record all of that at one time, you just have to assign the seperate tracks within Cubase....

Ummm... It won't work very well if it's just a line in. A guitar's singal is not line level, it will need a pre amp. Also, recording guitar direct is never to great of an idea... Well sometimes it's alright for an acoustic electric along with a mic.

Not trying to be a smartass but I think what you said is irrevalant, His question was can he record those instruments and vocals on seperate channels in Cubase at the same time...... and the answer was yes...... ;)

Hmm.... Thx for your answers.. but this last reply made me think one more round... Will I get lower (or even bad) sound quality if I plug the guitar into a line in on the Firewire 1814...compared to recod a guitar thru one of the preamp equiped channels...?

How would you record 2 vocals and 2 guitars, at the same time, with very low latency and very good sound quality...? Is a Firewire 1814 a bad choice?

The firewire is a good choice and I thought you knew that you needed a preamp for the guitars (my bad), you can,

1: get a stand alone preamp or small mixer or
2: get a DI box

if it was me I would get a stand alone preamp (something like a DMP-3 2 channel mic pre) or small mixer and mic the cab, this always sounds better than a DI.

For magnetic guitar pickups to sound it's best, they need to be plugged in to a "High Z" or "High Impedence" source. There's not enough resistance for the pickup to work against in a line in input (Low Z), and you'll lose a lot of high end detail. As Carter said you can get around this with a DI, which simply does impedence conversion (no effects or distortion emulation) or you could get something like a POD or VAmp that will have a High Z input, process the guitar signal with distortion, cab sims, effects, and output a signal suitable for a line-in. Hope this helps.

thx... so if you would recomend something cost-effective and with good quality, what would that be? The Firewire 1814 (+ a DI box/stand alone preamp) or something different???

...in other words, what do you recomend me to buy... (minimum is still to be able to record 2 guitars and 2 vocals at the same time...

ThX for your wonderful help!!!!!!
