Can anyone recommend an effects unit for electric guitar that's loaded with way more 'soft' and 'soothing' sounds than 'distortion' patches? Thanks.

Try the Roland GP-8, you can pick them up used for about $250 to $300 with the foot controller. Although not new by any means these units are really easy the use and completely user adjustable. I love the sounds i get from mine.

I've been using the DigiTech RP# series effects units for some years now. I like the newer ones better with the built in "tubes" and their pirces have gotten better too.
