I'm curious, I've often toyed with the idea of hiring out gear, is it worth it assuming that it will get damaged and how do you avoid people doing a runner with your gear?

Insurance is your best friend.

You wanna keep people from 'loosing' your gear?...Get photo copies of their ID's and get more than one form of ID with addresses. Inform them that it would be best for their health if the stuff comes back. Once upon a time, before Professor PoPo and his group of scientists discovered the Forenzica Evidencia, there was a disease that made fingers fall off so that musicians could not play their instruments any longer. I would hate for that disease to just pop up out of nowhere again. Wouldn't you?

rental gear

I worked in the live sound business for a number of years and it was very common to rent "music gear". THe main things to consider are your renters, their reputation and character, carry lots of insurance and always send a tech! He will help if there are problems and babysit (and set up/load out) the gear. My two bits. Didn't want to hijack Thanks.
