Black Knights of the 4H.
I am just trying to "finish off" my rack gear for my small rehearsal room/project studio. "Experimentation" is a great aspect of "the discovery process"... however, that being said (or written), I try to live with the axiomatic belief that : "dumb people don't learn from their mistakes, smart people learn from their mistakes .. but the smartest people learn from the mistakes of others." ..
This is what I have:
Mackie 32X8 Board
Alesis HD24
Neutrik Patchlink (1)
Alesis 3630 (2) ** (my dumb mistake)
** will be replaced by (2) Mercenary Audio FMR RNC racked
** total (4) RNC units (see my axiomatic statement above .. this is why
** I look at this board .. people who have been there.. done that..
B: Multicom Pro MDX4400
BBE 882 Sonic Maximizer
T.C. Electronics M-One
Lexicon MPX 550
Rocktron Intellifex (in my guitar rack .. but available for post processing)
B: Ultra DI Pro DI800
B: Power Play Pro
My Budget : 2 - 3k
What I know I need:
2 Effects units .. Thinking about the Kurzweil Rumour and/or Mangler.
The M-One and MPX 550 have pretty nice reverbs .. and kinda "nifty" with the "Dual Engine" architecture .. but their "chorus/flanger" are kind of "thin" and the "pitch shifting" really blows.
2 More patch bays/cabling (so that will be a part of the budget)
First Question .. what two units would the "sages" of this board recommend for another "reverb/effects unit" .. and a "mostly effects .. chorus/flange/delay/pitch unit"?
Second Question.. what about Mic Pres.. this kind of eludes me .. the pres on my Mackie are pretty nice, but would an external pre give me more "sonic vocabulary" and potential use? - or would they be recommended more for a computer set-up? If I should get one or two .. which one? I have heard (or read) alot about the MAudio DMP3.. and the RNMP. My band is an instrumental trio into Mathrock/Prog/Metal/Jazz .. very dynamic material .. but no vocalist.. however, I do plan on recording other bands and projects that will, no doubt, include vocals .. would it be a good idea for a mic pre or another "special unit".. something like the "Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster Pro" .. something that ultimately may be "re-purposed" easily for my "instrumental" projects, i.e. a mic pre/comp/efex thing - a - ma - jigger - doo - hickey.
Third Question .. should I dump my B: Multicom Pro MDX4400.. I just want to "kick things up a notch" .. by purchasing solid quality stuff here on out and dumping poopie stuff to defray some of the costs? This unit does afford me some different compression "color" that may come in handy for some uses.. it has been recommended that having a variety of compressors is not a bad idea .. it is just the B: .. so "to B or not to B" .. etc. This same "additional color" could come from a unit in the previous questions, thus, affording the abilty to "kick it up" and defray costs of the pursuant purchases.
Special Cosideration.. I get stuff pretty much at 10% over cost at our local GC.. this most often beats anything on ebay .. plus it is new and their return policy seems to negate the time/energy of ebay trolling... is there any benefit to trolling ebay in my situation? Most items I see that interests me end up costing just as much if not more than what I may get at GC.. but I haven't really spent a lot of time on ebay.
Opinions .. guidance .. advice .. critisisms .. all welcomed.
Thanks for your time and input.
