Could someone tell me what characteristic sonic differences one might expect between the Groove Tubes MD1B-t tube mic and the MD1B-f FET mic?

I believe someone had mentioned on a thread a while back that the AT 4047 (which I believe is FET) had a LOT of "character" to the point where it was not very versitile.
I might hazzard a guess that this could be a typical FET trait.

Has anyone heard either of these two mics? (DOT?).

Musicians friend is blowing them out at 2 bills a piece.

I was considering the tube vers as an alternative to an NTK or similar.

Meanwhile I will review the Big Mic Thread.

Thanks

I've got the 1b and I like it on some voices and bright acoustic guitars (taylor, maple guild) and really nice on twelve string
Not so much on a Gibson or Martin but still okay
I have the NTK and I find the GT much smoother, less bright
NTK works well on some GT on others. I like 'em both
Haven't tried the FET

Thanks BK

Less bright is what I'm looking for and I would also be happy with "smooth".

I like smooth.

Anybody else with knowledge of either of these.

I understand they are remakes of some fairly (once) popular GT mics.

I don't think enough people have much experience with these mics. For some reason, I just think they get looked over. Yup, I think it would be safe to call them a "sleeper."

We need someone to buy these things, check 'em out and give us the lowdown on them. I nominate you for this task, Formerlyfzlfile. I think you're up to the challenge. You should act on it quickly, though. I hear they're going pretty cheap right now.

Hey Chess,

Whadda you some kinda gear pimp? :)

I should be able to give my review by Wednesday.

MF had 5 left of the tube vers. (but a bunch of the FET's) so I got a pair of the tubes..... not matched but cheap.

For the price, if they aren't any good as drum overheads, which is kinda what I was looking to use them for, I can always sell one and still have another flavor for guitar and vox.

Still will listen to any opinions if anyone has heard these mics.

I have a band coming in to record Sunday, the 22nd -- a pretty good one, actually. I could probably use it on a bunch of stuff for that session (vocals, guitar, etc.) and post the final mixes for anyone who might be interested in hearing the GT in action. I could send it back to you Monday afternoon.
