Grrr, this is annoying

I ordered a new computer a few months ago, with one 40 g and one 120g hard drive, in that order. The first was obviously to run programs and the second for audio files.

Well, it turns out the b*st*rds put the 120g first in the chain and the 40g second. :mad: I installed windows onto the first drive, not realizing it was the big one. What a pain in the neck. That 40g drive is filling up RATHER QUICKLY with my bands project.
 
First, I don't see how this pertains to the Cool Edit Pro forum, and secondly... All you really need to do, is partition the larger drive, and designate it for storage. It's really not that difficult.
 
If we are talking about Cool Edit / Audition, I'd suggest using the smaller drive for the primary temp file directory, and the larger for the secondary and archive. I think the fact that the OS and programs are on the larger drive won't actually make a huge difference with the speed of modern systems.
 
Ozpeter, what's the effect on speed and performance of having that secondary temp file on the second hard drive? Is there anything to be gained by not using a second temp file? What's the advantage of using one?

It wasn't a Cool Edit question originally, no. I was going to move it to the computer forum in fact. But now it's turned into a Cool Edit thread, so it stays.
 
As I understand it the second temp file is for use when the first one fills up - so normally it doesn't matter where it is, so long as it is on another drive or partition.

Yeah, but before this thread becomes too relevant, let me just remind you that Big Boobies are cool...not the fake ones, though. You know what I'm talking about, lol.
 
As I understand it, CEP always plays, records and edits from within the primary temp folder. The advice that usually goes with that is the temps should be on a seperate physical drive to the program and o/s. I haven't seen any documentation that suggests your audio data and projects should be on a seperate drive too.

CEP/Audition is probably unique in requiring particular temp folders to work from. Other DAW's such as Sonar work off permanent recordings in the same Audio folder, so that sort of scheme does prefer a seperate large drive for your audio.

So, I don't see why you can't simply use the second 40gig for the Primary and Secondary temp folders - but save projects and completed work to the 120Gig C: drive, partitioned or not.
Unless the program crashes, the Temp folders should be cleaned out upon closing, so your 40gig drive need not ever get filled up.

Basically, what you're saying is that you've already installed a ton of programs on your C drive (the big one), and you don't want to reinstall them on the smaller drive, right? I'd recommend you get over that, lol. I have one 180 GB drive, and I just partitioned it 40/120, but you should be able to do the exact same thing. I've never run into problems recording on a drive that also contains my OS, but I know some people are nazis about it...those people are mainly repeating crap they read back in the day when computer's couldn't run a clock and load MicrosoftWord without skipping, lol.

Anyway, if space is the issue, why don't you just save all your audio on the big drive, whether or not it has programs on it. It'll be fine.

Using the second, larger (in my case, storage) drive for the second temp folder doesn't impinge on the performance of using the second drive for audio only, does it? That's my question. I'm glad I asked it. Oh, and what's wrong with small boobies? They're nice too.
 
Thanks guys. Yes, the old axiom is "files on D, program on c", but I guess that isn't a big deal with CEP

I've never had any problems with recording, because I always record new tracks to a mixdown, I'm just trying to get max performance for mixing, because i'm looking at around 30 tracks on some songs....and I'd rather not bounce, for fidelitys sake.

With todays technology, it's not really an issue anymore.

My sessions usually contain anywhere from 16 - 40 tracks each, depending on how many layers of adlibs I use, etc... I run my OS and progs off the same drive as I store my media. I have a 120 GB drive with no partitions, and I have no speed issues. You should be fine.

Looks like it's not necessary, but the intial reason was because it's a pain in the neck!! Also, I have a lot of important musical files on my comp and I don't want to be messing around with operating systems now. I'm just going to leave it.
