With regards to the mic-pre problems, this is from another board:

"Ok everybody, I'l speak...

First of all the modules sound fantastic. Granted 99.999% of the time I am mixing, so I haven't checked out the preamp portion, but the line amps / EQs are great.

It's interesting that all of the modules use the single ended class A output stage based on the BA283 card ( same as what's inside the N£V£ 1064, 1066, 1073 1272, etc) even the "81".
In the N£V£ 1081 the output is a class A/B push pull design.

The "81" uses a A/B amplifier in the EQ buffer amp cards, so it has a bit more of the 1081 sound.

In all cases the units produce a nice amount of 2nd and 3rd harmonic and the top end sounds sweet.

I ran some minimally miced drums through these and A/B'ed an identical setting on a popular plugin N£V£ emulation.
The sound was quite similar, but the long term impression was that when listening through the TNC..
the room that the drummer was in seemed like it was 20˚ hotter and the drummer sounded like he was smiling.... I know.. Rolling Eyes Ok?

I HIGHLY recommend that you run some pretty hot signals through these when you first get them and exercise every switch and pot. I had one or two that didn't pass signal until it got LOUD. This is a symptom of new switches with anticorrosive coatings on the contacts which are intended to self clean through use, not a problem.

Now to more serious matters. I have the same buzzing in my 81s that a few of you have reported. I disassembled the 81 and ran some tests.

Here are my findings so far:

It does not appear to be caused by power transformer induced EMI.

I ran the unit off an external supply and had the same problem.

The "73" and "84" have their inductors equally close to the power supply as the "81" and have none of these problems.

Re-routing the the audio cables (which go to the output pot and phase switch) away from the PSU made the noise floor higher.

Moving my hand in the proximity of the EQ cards made the noise floor higher.

There is a transistor on each of the EQ amp cards that is running very hot (Q4).

I suspect that there may be ultrasonic oscillations in the EQ amp cards. Every symptom I found and every other reported symptom lead me to this hypothesis.

If this is indeed the case, the solution will be much simpler than if it was power supply related. It will require a few very very small capacitors be tack soldered across a few components. I'll run more tests when I am able. Unfortunately, I don't have a working Oscilloscope here and am in the middle of producing one record and mixing two... plus having major dental work performed this morning.. ugh."

Thanks for putting that up, Chance. While I'm only getting a 73, I'm wondering if these kinds of mods might be beneficial for all the pres?

:D

Hey Chance, hate to be a pest but can you check on my order for me?

I paid shipping on 10/22 (verified funds were withdrawn from my account) and from what I understood in previous posts, items would ship the day after payment was recieved. As of today 10/29, "Items Shipped" still shows "NO".

thanks

I wouldn't worry much about that. Mine still shows "NO" as well, and I received my shipment last Friday. Watch for an email from FedEx, that will be your clue that your shipment is coming.

Even that FedEx email won't give you much lead time, though. I got the FedEx notice on Friday morning, and the shipment arrived in the afternoon.

This is a great start...

I'll be really looking forward to getting to the bottom of this issue. The main reason I added two 81's was for the EQ's on the units. I'm looking forward to using them for mix bus re-amping/EQ.

Thanks Gilliland!!!!!

Got my shipping invoice in the user console and paid it up via credit card.

From the last group buy in 2007:
I hope Chance will be able to include in my current shipment: two ES-24 shockmounts (for my two ACM-3 Ribbon Mics) and the replacement ribbons for the two ACM-3 Ribbon Mics and two ACM-4 Ribbon Mics.

Chance, thank you so much for all of your very hard work on this group buy!

Chance:

I'm due four ES-24 shockmounts from the last group buy, plus ribbons for the ACM-3. If it matters, I haven't been invoiced yet for this latest group buy.

Best,
Aj (email adam at oneXgoodXroomXdotXcom - without the Xs, of course.).

I wouldn´t worry about 81´s. It seems some have trouble with them and some not -so it should be a minor mod to prevent this, like carving off the
paint around the screws holding the cover as succested?

Oh! Hells Bells!
Was I supposed to get shock mounts for my ACM-3's? I didn't even realize that. (I have not looked for any mounts yet because I have never used these mics.)

Okay, send them over too, Chance.

Thanks a bunch,
RD

I'm really starting to dislike NO
I have some parts I want to cut for a buddy's project that I've been waiting on so I could use the new mics and pre. It's like knowing what you're getting for Christmas, but you can't open it until Christmas day. Anyway, Chance, your efforts in this are greatly appreciated.

For some who have been waiting and paid for shipping, there are around 60 big boxes that are shipping today. Some of the international orders have to be re packed because of the size limit.

Yeah.....I just finished building a new rack with a nice sized power supply for some of the gear I haven't racked yet.
Once my gear arrives I plan to rearrange.
Starting work on a new project that I've been putting off.

After reading some initial reviews about the 73 and 1200, I'm pretty pumped to get mine to check them out.

I'm very, very curious to see how my 73's will stack up against my Vintech 473's.

Just for comparison purposes:

I just this minute got an email from Fedex telling me my package has been shipped. Due here (on the east coast of US) next Wednesday, November 5.

Just for fun, I went to the User Console, and my order is now marked as Shipped! Three green YES's in a row.

Everything working beautifully for me. Thanks Chance.:)

Just to confirm;

Is the buzzing issue only present in the 81 and not the 73 and 84?

Thanks.

Yea!!!! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

I recieved a Shipment Notification from FedEx this morning, the console ship status showes "YES" and scheduled delivery is Tomorrow!!!!!!

Chance, Randy, Terry you are all great men in my book.

I going to start working on a schoolhouse rock episode that will star my red NO's, like:

"I'm just a NO, just a big old red NO,
and I sit upon the User Conso[le].
It's.. been.. a.. long time I've been sitting here with my two red NO brothers,
I know antichef would kick us out if he could have his druthers,
in the meantime we are here to stay....
oh I hope and I pray... and confess,
in one day... (hopefully less),
we'll be YES."

and then I'll wait for that part where the old cartoon guy steps in and says: "You made it, NO, you're a YES!!" ... "oh YEAH!!"

edit: it occurred to me that there may be readers on this board who haven't had this echoing in their heads for thirty years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJL2Uuv-oQ
