Hey drBill, can you take some measurements with some other piece of gear and see what is weird? I posted this over at PSW for you FYI.

My digital calipers seem to be broken, but from all I can tell, they are just a tiny bit over a couple of other pieces I measured. Hard to say, maybe half a mm. I'm not sure why this would make such a huge difference by the time 3-4 units are stacked, but???

Like I said - it feels like a twilight zone episode. I'm just not getting it. Maybe I've just been sheltered from this since I've used hardwood rails for so long. But even when I've had holes that didn't line up in the past, you could at least seem to get 2 screws into the problem piece. Not so here.....

It sure seems odd that two commercial racks would have the same "issues".

PS - thanks for posting that over there for me. I tried to register there before and always have a problem.

I am bringing the 3 units back with me to try and rack up (something I didn't want to do until everything was shipped) but I need to inform the manufacturer. I would guess they are supposed to be 2 space. I have a 2 space blank panel and will lay it over a pre to see where the mistake was made

LOL so did I.

Sorry, just trying to help out, I think I may have contributed to the confusion over there so I felt I needed to make amends...DOH! I can go delete mine if you wish.

I am very curious about this racking oddity. Let us know what you find Chance. In the building I am in now, I can easily see three different styles of rack rails though the spacing should be the same. Luckily, or not, I only will have two of these that stay with me out of the seven in my order so it won't be an issue forme I guess but I am curious all the same as to why they would get so out of whack when you get three deep.

Chance - try 4. That's when it becomes impossible. Three is doable, although extremely tight.

Hey Doc. Could you put a caliper on them and give us an exact measurement of the height? Might could be that a quick brush with a belt sander might be all that's needed. Aluminum does not grind well but a hit or two with fine grit might do it. Of course it would mess up the paint but if you're careful and touched it up a bit it might not be noticeable. Just a thought. (I knew there was a reason I only got one) LOL

:D

Just a thought, but I personally would not grind/sand anything metal near electronics. So unless you take the faceplate and chassis completely apart and away from the guts, don't do any sanding. Metal shavings and dust have a tendency to get into small spaces.

I've always had problems rack mounting gear. Probably because I made the racks myself and I pretty much suck at stuff like that.
As long as you can put it in a rack and it won't fall out, I'm happy.

Of course you are right, Markit. I didn't think that I had to mention that one should completely seal the unit prior to an endeavor such as this but I'm glad you brought it up, just in case...:) Myself, I would disassemble the unit first. However, depending on the depth of the actual chassis, it could be done assembled. Anyway, just the ramblings of an old man.

:D

I like a good looking rack, free of unsightly spaces

I mean that both ways :)

Wasn't one of the boxes marked ribbons on one of the first pictures ?
are you waiting from the previous order ?

sometimes some of these questions don't seem to get answered

The smaller container with mics came first, then the bigger with preamps
-about a week apart. 100 peamps are coming soon to complete the lot.
Now Chance & co are sorting orders and that takes time, so patience.

Matti

I take it to mean he's waiting for ribbons [ not mics ] replacements
either way he's asked a couple times

That's a good question. I didn't see any spare ribbons with my mics. Maybe they are coming seperately.

I just measured and compared with a known single space rack piece, and they're identical. Photo on PSW

I got the spare ribbons, sit tight. My problem now is: Everyone wants everything now

Not 100% true. Been in this situation before. I'm patience personified; it'll happen whenever it happens.

A few weeks ago, we were talking like maybe around "Thanksgiving or early December" - well, we're way earlier than that, aren't we?

"All we are saying is give chance a peace."

+1 -- Pass around the 'relax' pills

I got a birthday in late November, Christmas in late December--it could come any time and be a great present! No hurries here. Chance--I know you want to do everything you can for folks who are waiting--but you're already doing so much. Don't let it get to you.
