But if you're doing a reproduction, I suppose you would stick with the original, even if Al Gore doesn't like it!

That's it really. Otherwise we could just have a simple opamp preamp which specs. better but maybe doesn't sound how we want. Also, the output stage passes DC which is why the output transformer needs to be gapped, otherwise the core would saturate. All of these different aspects to the design affect the sound, and there are many of them.

I may be wrong but I think I read that that was a typo, and the "actual" figure is 0.05%.
"I just got off the phone with the manufacturer and yes there were other errors too. The engineer told me that the distortion not more than 0.5% is at +26db max output, at 0 dbu output it is 0.05% at 0dbu output THD is from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The Di is 20Hz to 20kHz"

Well in this case I was referring more to the ratio of the transformer, not going all the way to ICs. If you don't really need the very high headroom and low source impedance, you don't need the current into the transformer, which means the transformer doesn't need to be as large, etc. I mean into 10K how efficient is the output stage? 5%? That's all well and good for DIY and pro studio guys, but for a manufacturer who wants to roll out a two C note product to the denizens of DAW-land, that's money perhaps better spent elsewhere . . . but that's just me, I'd want to see the 10mA version of a Neve that could run on a 9V battery . . .

And, no doubt, built into an XLR connector. :D

Well you can't fit a 9V inside an XLR, but I do have an XLR preamp . . . that needs external power. I thought about doing a battery version, but I can't figure out how to turn it off, so . . . it has a transformer though! It might see the light of day sometime . . .

Hey Chance?

Have you seen the totals lately?

Have you ever wondered "what the hell have I done now?"

This is getting crazy, right?

This might have been answered already but my brain is fried.
Do we know what kind of tube is in the 1200 mic?

My recollection is a 12ax7. Which of course means you can substitute others in that family - 12at7, etc. I've ordered one of those also and will probably swap the tube for a NOS 12at7. Less gain, but should be smoother.

trying to sort this all out.. at what quantity do price breaks show up? over a 100 for the pre's any on the mics? a bit confused as several have passed that but the price not updated which i'm sure would increase the numbers as well.
I thought I saw it was like $25 off the pres if we reached this level, and at that point i may take a chance on another pair. And be able to talk some friends into them that are on the fence. Thanks!
Chance?

The price break was on the pres only. $25 off for a particular model pre if we ordered at least 200 of that model. Or $25 off if we ordered at least 100 of all three models. At this point we appear to be in the bonus as people have indicated an interest in ordering at least 100 of each model pre. The rubber will meet the road when everyone is invoiced and needs to pay up. Assuming that those who have indicated an interest actually do pay, then all of the pres will be $25 off the listed price.

I'm in for 4 pres and am thinking about picking up two more.

In case anyone cares to listen, I was messing around with overhead mics on drums today. I compared a few from the last group buy just to see how different they sounded.

I made three short takes using only two overhead mics and a kick. The kick is identical on all three takes. The only difference is the overheads. None were matched pairs. I just had two of each.

Take 1 – Audiopile C-61 - small diaphragm condenser (left and right)
Take 2 – TNC ACM-3 - ribbon (left and right)
Take 3 – TNC ACM-310 - small diaphragm tube (left and right)

(I know these aren't all really overheads but I just wanted to know how they sounded as such.)

It was all recorded and uploaded with no EQ or processing at all.

What kick mic did you use? It sounds pretty good! Especially without any eq!

Also, I'm looking to get the 310s and I was wondering where you had those mics placed for the drum kit on the recordings. Thanks again for the samples.

address

Once we get there soon, what shipping address will
be used as I´ll try to combine shipments coming
to Helsinki. Can other address than Paypal address
be used?

I won't go into detail here just yet about this, but there is a mass email due out very soon that will cover this... After everyone receives this email, I'm sure we'll discuss this more in detail.

I am seeing that all the preamps broke the 100 count mark, so am I correct in assuming that we will be getting the preamps at the lower price? Will this be reflected in the Musicians Workshop Group Buy product page?

Thanks to Chance and Randy for all the work they have put into this.

Nick

I'm not sure...but I assume it will... Since I only maintain the site, and do nothing with the financial side, I'll have to wait on Chance to instruct me to change the prices... I'll ask him tomorrow though... I'm also gonna try to get a definate answer to the mics that may or may not get dropped from the GB... These are all factors that will change the scope of this buy...

Thanks!

Hey Randy,

I entered my address info into the user interface, but I don't see any "Submit" button, so I don't think it took. After I filled in the last text box I was just kind of left hanging with nothing more to click on.

That kick was triggered into my Roland TD-10 module. Then I fed that straight into my sound card. It's an acoustic drum set. Only the kick was triggered. The rest was all natural.

On the other hand, I have learned over the years that getting a good kick sound is more about tuning and tweaking the drum than what mic you choose.

Also, I'm looking to get the 310s and I was wondering where you had those mics placed for the drum kit on the recordings. Thanks again for the samples.

The left was about 3 or 3-1/2 feet (1 meter) above the snare drum. I tilted it slightly forward to pickup the snare and some of tom 1.

The right was same height above the floor tom. Tilted slightly toward the ride cymbal, but I don't know if that was necessary. All the cymbals came through pretty good regardless.

I think I did like the 310's best of all. They just had somewhat of a warmer approach, but yet still sounded full, big, and clear. I had plenty-o-signal so I didn't need to crank up the preamps at all. That kept the tracks cleaner.

The C-61's seemed to have a tiny bit more "air" but I don't know if that is all that important on drum tracks.

Combined shipping?

Quick question: will it be possible to combine the shipments to multiple participants? This would be useful especially for participants outside the US.

Thanks,

JDB.

Does anyone have experience of recieving FedEx parcels from abroad outside the US?

I recently received a box of three mics insured for £600 which I was to repair and send back. FedEx decided that I needed to pay them £112 before the would give me the parcel for tax fees and for their "holding charge". When I refused to pay they ended up getting the debt collectors!

Is there any way we can ensure that this won't happen? Could we declare zero value on the tax declarations?

No.

chance is running a real business and he can't lie on customs forms. He's also an honest guy, so he's not gonna lie...

But I'm not chance, so pay no attention.
