Gift is only going to matter if the receiving country's postal service believes it. Which they may or may not-- depends on who screens it/that country. I sent some CDs to a friend in Canada (from the usa) as a GIFT! Marked GIFT but they opened it, and they weren't wrapped so he got charged... STUPID.

Answer:

All foriegn orders get wrapped in wrapping paper.

Problem solved.

also my experience shipping from the US to other countries-- UPS/FedEX will add customs brokerage charges.
Problems with USPS- even online, sometimes their site just doesn't work and it can be a pain and some work to ship a package! And to some locations(UK, i think) insurance is limited at around $600 for some reason-- every country is different, so that's another consideration.
FedEx, unfortunately, is probably going to be MUCH easier in this case for the sender at least.

Some large orders that I sent to Austrailia, Canada, and the UK were insured for over $1K

Personal experiences (in receiving ~100 parcels from the US to NL):

- Both UPS and FedEx add brokerage fees, these fees have been increasing for similar shipments over the past years, and the fees are much more likely to be present if you're not a regular customer (ie: if you don't have a shipping account with them that sees regular use).

- Shipments that are marked as 'gift' and/or have a low declared value regularly get opened to see what's inside; if it looks fishy Customs will send you a letter asking for a copy of the invoice or other proof of the real value. They are savvy enough that they accept (and even specifically mention) PayPal transaction printouts and/or eBay auction numbers. Funnily enough, 'gifts' from the Far East appear much less likely to get opened.

JDB.
[yes, the multiple of anecdote isn't data, but still...]

Santa Claus?? LOL

As Larry the Cable Guy would say:

Now, I don't care who you are, that right there is funny!

On the last GB I made a mistake and sent an order to Austrailia that was supposed to go to Atlanta (USA) The person in Austrailia sent the box to Atlanta and I sent the correct order to Austrailia and marked the box something to the effect of "warrentee repair" to avoid double duty.

I think they changed it recently for some countries-- looking at the USPS site it's $650 max to the UK now, it's over 3,000 to Australia. But, beware it varies now from country to country-- just something to consider.
GOOGLE "USPS pub 51"(sorry--it won't let me post a URL, yet) for the PDF with each country's limit -- see page 33 and on.. $675 limit to Canada.

So we now have a due date for the invoices. The next sound you hear is me trying to find the money to pay for all of this. lol

Yep..

Just wanted to say something:

In the last mass email, that I sent out, after reading it, I sounded "grouchy" or stern...to me at least. I didn't mean for it to sound that way... I was just trying to be clear and to the point so there'd be no confusion as I'd hate for someone to miss out on this GB because of something that I said that might have been confusing.

If anyone thought that I was being grouchy or stern in the mass email, I appologize.

whats the deal with shockmounts???

shouldn't these be added to the products where the mic doesn't necessarily come with one? (i.e. acm-3, acm-583...)

Mark 'em as gifts if you want, if it were me I wouldn't, but then I'd register for and collect CA sales tax for the locals too, I like to minimize my personal exposure that way . . .

He's not selling them so sales tax doesn't apply in California. Now if he were marking them up beyond the shared expense of design and tooling, THEN he'd have to charge sales tax.

Kinda like if your friend is going to go to Guitar Center to buy a KXP2000mkii and you say, "hey, here's some money, could you pick up a G7000X mic pre while you're there". He doesn't charge you sales tax.

All this sales tax stuff is making me nervous. We are all buying these things whole sale, so how would sales tax apply. Of course sales tax is on the entire cost of the item when you buy retail, so you are paying tax on the item, shipping, overhead, sales commission, everything. And if a dealer buys a lot of items that don't sell they can write off the loss, but since we are the end user that might actually make us accountable for the "value" of these items instead of cost. (you are supposed to pay taxes on gifts)Frankly I do not want to know. Tax laws can be unfair.(paying taxes for yard sale profits, used cars, things that taxes were already paid for and owing up to 50% inheritance tax on property)

People, you're creating problems where problems don't exist. If you've read the entire thread, you'd know that this is not the first group buy that's been run on here. So for those of you who are involved in this for the first time, have a little faith that the person running this has some idea as to what he's doing. It's starting to sound a little like an octogenarian who lost their Applebee's coupon. Relax. This is supposed to be fun.

Amen. For those of you who want to, your state board of equilization will be happy to charge you sales tax if you want to notify them that you care to contribute.
