Is it the 13th yet? :o

A thought... people should be aware that a deadline of April 13 at 12:00 am EDT means that April 12 at 11:59 pm EDT is really the last minute you can change your order (adjust the time for your own zone).

I'm just pointing that out in case some people see April 13 and think they can make changes that day.

Maybe its a monolithic transistor array? MAT04?
A chip with a number of super-matched transistors.

Where's O'Brien and LaForge when you need them?

Actually, I'm jealous because I don't have a damn clue as to what you're talking about. :(
But I have a feeling I'm gonna be learning in the not too distant future.

"TL072s. The folk at the booth said that the chips are for the metering"
new information from the Prodigy forum
And my quess would be the 14 pin is for the meter in the 73 & 84 not utilized in 81

Holy crap! This is a little disconcerting to know we are paying for machining that (aparently) will be used to push out a billion more of these things for everyone else. Also a little lame that we won't be getting a unique piece of gear, but rather, something that will be rebranded over and over again in the near future. I thought they had told Chance they wouldn't be rebranding these.... maybe I misread. Granted, the schematic isn't exactly original, but at least they could LOOK different.... sheesh....

It is more than a little unlikely that what the GB will be paying on a per unit basis and in the aggregate would finance the development and initial production of these. IMHO, we just got a very early (and cheap) shot at these. They need to sell a whole lot more than 500-600 of these to make it worth their while.

Local LA Pickup available???

Hi Chance!

Question regarding the delivery.

When the units come in, would it be possible to pick up my order from you directly - saving on the hassle and cost of shipping? (I'm pretty close.) Also, I'd love to get the chance (sorry, bad pun) to shake your hand! :D Just curious. Thanks.

In case anyone cares to listen, I was messing around with overhead mics on drums today. I compared a few from the last group buy just to see how different they sounded.

I made three short takes using only two overhead mics and a kick. The kick is identical on all three takes. The only difference is the overheads. None were matched pairs. I just had two of each.

Take 1 – Audiopile C-61 - small diaphragm condenser (left and right)
Take 2 – TNC ACM-3 - ribbon (left and right)
Take 3 – TNC ACM-310 - small diaphragm tube (left and right)

(I know these aren't all really overheads but I just wanted to know how they sounded as such.)

It was all recorded and uploaded with no EQ or processing at all.

Absolutely! It's always a pleasure to meet those who participate. There are MANY locals who are in on this.

It's nice to see all three pres breaking the 100 mark now. It's amazing how many new people have signed up in the past week. I think there were only about 250 people a week ago and now there's over 400 and more than 100 haven't even picked out anything. Very cool (unless you're the one who has to pack the boxes to ship it all out :D)

This might have been answered already but my brain is fried.
Do we know what kind of tube is in the 1200 mic?

Thanks for this...

I'm actually really excited that I'm ordering a pair of the ACM-310's as well as the ACM-3's.....for this application I obviously preferred the 310's (if a little bright), but this was a nice A/B/C track to listen to this afternoon.

Thanks!
Jay

RawDepth - thanks for the clips! Can't wait to check them out more in detail tomorrow when I get into the studio. The 310's sounded decent though. A different vibe, but still quite nice.

In all fairness, my ACM-3 ribbons were both droopy when I got them. I re-tensioned them but I don't know if I did them right. Then to make matters worse, after the session I realized that the ACM-3's may have been out of phase with each other.

Since they are a side address microphone, I situated them horizontally with the primary "side" facing down toward the drums. No problem, however, the tops (the round end caps) were pointing toward each other. I never gave it a thought until after the fact. I suppose they were really 180 degrees out on one plane. Perhaps I should have pointed both ends toward the wall in front of or behind the drum set to keep them parallel. Oh well.

The point is...you guys may be able to get yours to sound even better. Especially on a guitar cab where they belong.

Hmm, OK, everybody's using the power transistors.

are those Carnhills too tall to stand up in a 1u case? Is that why they were done point-to-point? That's some nice wiring--a lot of work, but I guess less than the original!

Yep, that'll be a standard class-A output stage. They get warm.

The later version of the Carnhills can be mounted sideways in a 1u rack. Never standing with the terminals up unless in a 2u. I wouldn't worry too much until you hear these Chinese transformers. I'll be happy to sweep one and see how it performs compared to the Carnhills I have here. I am a little concerned about the distortion figure for the preamps though. Even though these are not based around clean designs, 0.5% distortion is a lot.

I may be wrong but I think I read that that was a typo, and the "actual" figure is 0.05%.

I would expect! I just don't get why a modern version would need that much current. Generally these will be driving 10K these days, not 600 ohm. And +30dBu headroom might not be very important if your converters clip at +18dBu. But if you're doing a reproduction, I suppose you would stick with the original, even if Al Gore doesn't like it!
