No need! I composed a reply to this to post here, but it required naming names I didn't want to name. So instead I posted a longer-from reply on my site.

Unfortunately for me I've refrained from posting my opinions about preamp faceplate colors and the like, and thus have not met the 5-post minimum that would enable me to post the actual URL to this piece of insightful investigative journalism. So if you're interested in learning the truth about phantom power and ribbon microphones, go to recordinghacks.com ... it's the lead story, at least for now.

In wholly unrelated news, I'm hoping to take a tour of some of the German microphone factories later this week... Gefell has a strict no-photos policy, but I should fare better at Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser.

Damn it; I have a patchbay!!! But I understand what they're saying. You need to have all your connections made before you turn the preamp on and that's something that I'm pretty much in the habit of doing. But I'm still probably going to put tape on the 48v button anytime I pull out the ribbons. :o

I got problems.

I just ordered four of the 1084s. That's 6 for me. I'm going to sell Mackie 800r to pay for the 4 1084s.

I'm either gonna feel like a hero or an idiot when this is all done.

im taking the simplicity approach. i dont want eq knobs to fiddle with. i wanna get it great at the source. i have to agree that strapping extras on a circuit has to change it in some way. im down for a couple 73-s. if the price drops maybe try one of the others.

Nothing at all, that's why the 73 is going almost 3 to 1 over the others. Chance himself said the 73 is the most versatile pre, so pick YOUR favorite. I believe also that they are going to use common parts, so one TNC model will not have inferior parts compared to another TNC pre.

I think that Chance was talking as if you were going to buy 1 unit. I think a lot of us are looking at multiple units. In that scenario, say you're buying 4 units. No one needs 4 DIs.

I think it's pretty awesome of him. I believe (at least I HOPE so) that Chance is adding a "handling" fee or something like that to make this more than just a brotherhood effort for him, but....



I know Randy said about 50 pages back :confused: that he was pinching pennies and trying to decide which mic(s) he could afford. That's been sitting kinda funny with me.




When we talk about this as a "Group" buy, I think of it truly as a GROUP effort. (You know, all for one, one for all....)




I'd like to make a suggestion. If we each kicked $1-2 dollars on top of our order's total price as a thank you to Randy for making this such an informed smooth effort, maybe he could get the pre or mics he really wants.



I mean, the amount of time he's put into the website would have cost hundreds (if not more) and he could buy whatever he wanted.



Just an idea - and he didn't pay me to say it either!!! :D:D



So what do you guys think? Could we do this Chance? Or is there a way for those of us who WANTED to do it?

I've been thinking the same thing but was afraid to mention it being a newbie and all. An extra dollar or two would be easy.

I'm selling a pair of C1000S to pay for a pair of the 1200s. Even if the 1200s are lame, it's probably still an upgrade. :)

I was a 1084 refugee in the 1073 camp. I swapped my two 1073s for 1084s last night, putting the 1084 over 100. If the ordering period lasts too much longer I may double down. Argh.
 
I support the Randy appreciation fund. I bet half of us wouldn't even be participating if it wasn't this easy.

I think many of us "tipped" Chance on the last GB for all his time and trouble in putting together the GB. I added some $$ to the final payment for local shipping. I see no problem with doing that here for Randy in some fashion. In fact if Randy has an available paypal account, I'd be happy to make a contribution up front right now.:D
