I was wondering about that as well. It is a pretty obscure tube -- or at least I could find little on it through Google.

If the tube is both obscure and soldered in, some knowledge of the tube quality and expected characteristics (yeah, I know it glows when it's on) would be helpful, if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Now that the quantity of the ACM-1200's has reached 200, does that mean the price gets lowered or does the price/quantity only work for the preamps?

Thanks,
Lance

Hey, back on the donation button issue....

I'd love to donate - tip, pay, whatever - a bit to BOTH Randy and Chance.

Randy, can you put an option for tipping to both of you?

I am also on the tipping bandwagon. These guys deserve something for all their time and effort.
I am also looking for suggestions on what mics to get. I have a limitted budget and have initially decided to get a pair of 1200's. I only have cardioid pattern mics right now (LDC and SDC), I don't own any tube mics, and I figure this would be a great way to get both. I primarily record vocals ranging from classical and musical theater to pop as well as all sorts of live classical and cabaret style performances. Would this be a smart mic selection?
I also run a nonprofit opera company and I've started recording everything we do. We generally have a 17-26 piece orchestra and a cast of 5-10 leads plus 35-45 ensemble members. Which mics might be good for this purpose?
Thanks,

Juan

Randy,

I was over at psw and tried go to the reg. site using your link at the bottom of one of your posts and it took me to a completly diffent site, like it's been hijacked or something. Check it out.

I'm really interested in this info as well.

AFAIK, the price break on volume was only for the pres. I don't believe Chance has ever indicated otherwise.

I'm definately in for the tip jar! Work well done deserves a reward.

Best of luck with the interview/job hunt Randy!

Important Update!

Hi All:

I just spoke with Chance via telephone and he has decided that the cut-off date for the Group Buy is: April 13, 2008 - 12am EDT.

I have created a "countdown" clock on Registration page, the main page of the User Console and the "View Quantity By Product" page.

Again, a cut-off date for the group buy has been set: April 13, 2008 - 12am EDT.

Mark your calendars! Remind your friends!

All:

I've wrestled with this idea of donation/tips all day and I'm flattered with all the posts, PM's and emails that I've recieved regarding this.

I spoke with Chance about this and he says that he would feel a bit awkward accepting donations/tips.

As I said, I've wrestled with this idea all day and after much thought I have decided that, and speaking for myself, I will accept. Chance graciously offered to supply me with an a'la cart list of whatever gear that I wanted from the GB list, but I really feel awkward about that... Like Chance said earlier in one of his replies, "This is OUR group buy." I wanted to help and I did what I could. By the numbers of emails and PM's that I've received on this subject, there are others that would like to help by donating as well. Should Chance had not accpeted my offer of donation of my time and server space, we wouldn't have the Registration Portal or the User Console...

So in the spirit of Chance accepting my offer of donation, I will accept any donations that anyone would like to give. All will be appreciated. I would like to let you know up-front how the donations will be handled so that there is no confusion:

  1. Straight off the top will go 10% to my Church offering.
  2. Due to the amount of traffic the group buy has generated, I need to buy more bandwidth (a little bigger pipe) and do some server/site/software upgrades to support this and any future group buys better.
  3. Pay for gear via this group buy + shipping.
  4. Any funds that might be left over, I will donate to an honorable charity of my choice.

Link to my donation page is:
Donate To Randy - Zetajazz44

If anyone would like to donate directly to Mr. Pataki, please contact him on a one-on-one basis. If Chance sticks with his decision not to accept donations, I fully respect that. I've made a good friend in Chance over the past few weeks. He is an honorable man. Hats off to Mr. Chance Pataki.

Someone make this clear for me. Is the April 13th cutoff just for registration for the buy? Can orders be changed after that date? Does money have to be in by that date. Just must be a confusing day for me.

no orders after the 13th. you will be invoiced shortly after. you will wait for six months and get your gear

I will be sending out a "mass-mail" explaining everything this week end. This cut off date is only so I will have an idea of the quantity of everything I can submit to the manufacturer.

So we've got 8 days to get in 17 more orders for the 81s in order to satisfy the most stringent (and presumably correct) interpretation of the conditions for a price break.

(I'm getting this info from Randy's status page at http://www.n344rb.com/MUSICIANSWORKSHOP/QuantityByProduct.asp )

To the over eighty people who haven't yet selected any products - I hope you'll all agree that it's a good idea to get both a 73 or 84 (or pair) *and* an 81 (or pair), simply because the 81 is a little different. I'm getting two, and I plan to use them for outboard EQ in addition to pres - remember that the 81 has the most EQ action going on.

If possible, can you please include some info about the 310 (tube quality and expected characteristics) in that email?
Thanks!
