I'm excited to try my first ribbon and tube mics out!

Once the mics come in we're due for a new project thread for everyone modding their mics. I'm very curious to change capsules out and hear the difference as I've not done it before. Those with experience might be so kind as to take digital photos & post as they make the modifications. :o

This is a really cool opportunity. Thanks again Chance for making such a reasonable offer available to the board.

I second all of this. This will be my first shot at ribbon mics and tube mics as well, and it's happening because Chance is making it happen. Very exciting! It's like Christmas in May (or June, or maybe even July if there's a typhoon, I guess)...

Yes, I'm very glad to have this opportunity to try out some tube and ribbon mics for a great deal! Thanks very much to Chance for orchestrating this fantastic buy!

I believe the shipping cost was on the shipping label the last time. I'm not certain on that tho.
Mine was $12.50 for 18 lbs SoCal to NorCal (about 400 miles) on the brown truck. 6 mics. YMMV - gas has gone up.

That's a good ballpark. I don't have UPS tables or anything, but my best guess is that the UPS shipping base rate is about $6.50 or $7.00 now. For ground, that would probably cover one or two FET SDCs without any case (a pound and under a cubic foot) within two or three states in either direction.

The heaviest mic should be the ACM-6802T. I have a mic that I'm pretty sure is almost identical. It weighs approx. 10 pounds including the case. The original shipping box from China fit snugly around the flight case, which would put the outside dimensions of the package at approx. 9"x16"x11".

From Beverly Hills, 90210 to Bangor, Maine:

FedEx Ground (to a business address): $11.14
FedEx Home Delivery (ground): $13.05
FedEx Express Saver (3 day): 36.41
FedEx 2 Day: $50.38

UPS Ground: UPS won't give me an online rate quote for ground or 3-day shipments for some reason.
UPS 3-Day Select: UPS won't give me an online rate quote for ground or 3-day shipments for some reason.
UPS 2nd day air: $50.38

My advice: ship FedEx. It's usually a couple of dollars cheaper to business addresses and the same price for residential, but their web site doesn't suck like UPS's. They also don't hold packages unnecessarily. When packages arrive in the Bay Area, I almost always get it the next day from FedEx. UPS? It often sits there for three or four days less than an hour from here.

Gonna get an ACM-1 and the first thing I am going to do is hack off that crappy cord and put in some Canare star quad and a Neutrik connector. Then the fun can begin with transformers. I'm thinking Lundahl. Does anyone knwo which Lundahl the Shiny Box mics are using? Probably the LL2912. :)

Anyone know if the ACM-6802T has some sort of mic clip/fatening device other than the shockmount?

Very important (Question to Chance) :

My paypal adress has changed (My parents divorced and moved out and I moved in appartment).

I have done the first group buy without any problems.

Can you ship to a different adress then the one on my paypal?

Thanks

Francois

when you're about to send the money via paypal, there is an option to change the shipping address.

Just a thought.
I'm not sure, but I think last time I imported the mics thru my business and it was a nightmare at tax time explaining all the $ deposited in my business account and the deposit to the bank of China. Since there is no P&L, I will do the import as personal. This won't affect anything so don't worry.

I'm sure this has been asked, but I will ask anyway.

Chance, when you place your order with China how long do you expect it to take for the mics to be in your hands?

It takes about a month to cross the pond. For some reason the bank transfer takes a long time. This might have been due to all the holidays they have in China

Orders stop on the sixth at midnight. I won't be logging in until I get up on the 7th, but will honor those as well

Are these Mics actually on the Market under a "Brand Name" and Chance gets them w/ no logo? The ACM-1 looks just like a few mics on the Market. How about the ACM-3 and the 6802T? & I know the 310 is his own design. These are the 4 mics I'm most interested in.

I tried to do my Homework and I read that the capsules are made by 797 Audio who makes SP mics. Are people hoping the 6802T will be something like the SPT3? Are we not allowed to talk "Brand Names"?

Just a few questions before my last minute order.

Thanks,
B.

Yeah the only brand name that can be mentioned is "TnC". I wouldn't be surprised if someone copies the 310, but remember you saw it here first. The "ACM" in the model number stands for "Another Cheap Mic". I did this as to not upset any brand name companies. It has nothing to do with the quality. The quality is much better than the last "buy"

Then I guess I've been operating under a delusion. I assumed, apparently wrongly, that the ribbon mics, since they are absolutely identical in appearance to those in the last buy, are in fact identical in all respects to those mics. Have you been able to compare these to the prior ones? In what way is the quality different?

Chance, you sure aren't giving us much to go on here. I've been following faithfully some 15 or 20 pages of discussion here and I don't know anymore now than I did the first day.

There are no frequency curves, no test results, no reviews, not even a vague comparison. Most just have a tiny picture and scanty specs. Do you know anything about these mics at all? Would you buy them if you were me?

All I've been hearing is how we are not allowed to mention any brand names because it wouldn't be "politically correct" or something. Well, this website is for home hobbyists to hang out, discuss, and learn about gear, not to keep those few vendors happy.

Throw us a bone, already. Comparing them to the last group buy doesn't help me any. I wasn't part of that one.

(Okay, rant over. I feel better now.)

I wasn't in on the last buy, but they don't all look "absolutely identical" to me--either in looks or specs (I'm assuming the mics from the last buy are what is pictured near the beginning of this thread...I could be wrong). I was thinking these would be in the same ballpark, maybe, but not necessarily identical. Maybe Chance's reference to quality is about QC, which was an issue with some last time.

I didn't hear any stories of Chance having [taken advantage of] anybody...on the last group buy. I trust he will be fair about it...
If these mics perform even half decent, then you have already saved...by not buying them retail. I am willing to take that gamble.
Amen! There is an element of Chance in all of this! For me, that's part of the fun :)
