I admit I am interested in them. I am just trying to get more info out of him.

Chance, you sure aren't giving us much to go on here. I've been following faithfully some 15 or 20 pages of discussion here and I don't know anymore now than I did the first day.

There are no frequency curves, no test results, no reviews, not even a vague comparison. Most just have a tiny picture and scanty specs. Do you know anything about these mics at all? Would you buy them if you were me?

All I've been hearing is how we are not allowed to mention any brand names because it wouldn't be "politically correct" or something. Well, this website is for home hobbyists to hang out, discuss, and learn about gear, not to keep those few vendors happy.

Throw us a bone, already. Comparing them to the last group buy doesn't help me any. I wasn't part of that one.

(Okay, rant over. I feel better now.)

OK as far as freq curves, it was too much trouble to put them on my site
Test results? You will see the results when everyone here posts them.
About mentioning other brand names. That is what got our last group buy attempt shut down. I can say this now, but we were getting tube mics for around a note in the key of C ($100.00) that were rebranded (the model #sounds like a weapon) and a couple of small mods and sold for $1K.
I don't sell mics for a living, I run my studio for that. On the group buys I posted all reciepts and accounted for every $ spent. 99% of the last buy purchasers were very happy. Sure there is a lot more I could do, but why? Look at the price. If you feel uncomfortable, just pass on it.

amen, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. you want every little piece of info your heart desires? then spend a grand (or more even) on a mic. for 35-95 dollars a mic, i don't think you can really go wrong. as has been stated already, even if you hate the mic, you could probably turn a profit slinging it on ebay.

can someone pm me and let me know what mic's model # sounds like a weapon so i know what chance is talking about? i'm coming up blank in my mind. (common occurance)

Not a lot of talk about it, but I just sent off an email for the ACM-4. Looks Russian if you get my drift but the doubleribbon would perhaps make for nice drum o/hs. For the price, I'm sure I can find SOMETHING to use them on.

If you find out let me know too. Nothing comes to mind.

I was just going to say--once you start looking, it's shocking how many mics are named like guns...I thought it would have been easier to figure out!

AK-47, M-16, M9...lol

Actually, I think the cartridge it fires makes it more of an assault rifle :D

Sorry, couldn't resist...I am stupid

Looks like a great chance to score some nice gear, here. Has anyone had any experience modding one of the ACM3 (?- B&O clone?) ribbons? I'm wondering about a "Joly" mod on a pair of these. Is there alot of excess mesh around the ribbon , and does Cinemag make a traffo that will fit?

I wasn't in on the last buy, but they don't all look "absolutely identical" to me--either in looks or specs (I'm assuming the mics from the last buy are what is pictured near the beginning of this thread...I could be wrong). I was thinking these would be in the same ballpark, maybe, but not necessarily identical. Maybe Chance's reference to quality is about QC, which was an issue with some last time.

Amen! There is an element of Chance in all of this! For me, that's part of the fun :)
You're right - the specs don't match up - but then, what do published specs mean? The ones at the beginning of the thread look like they were cut and pasted from mic to mic.
The mics I have from the last buy look exactly like the ACM 2.3.and 4 - as near as I can tell from the poorly detailed photos. There were some QC issues as you mention, but I certainly got much more than I paid for. Chance did a great job, and seems as honest as the day is long. I certainly don't hesitate to deal with him again in this buy.

My only question was - are these ribbon mics qualitatively better than the last ones? To me, that would mean an upgraded transformer, and might sway me to buy some more ribbons, in addition to the non-ribbon mics I have already ordered.

Thanks again Chance, for all your sweat in this.

Yes M Joly is one talented dude. I have some of his work here that I aquired from other sources. Another is Dave Thomas. I only wish I had their chops for modding.

Not an issue of political correctness. I've been involved in a couple of past attempted group buys where loose talk and open comparisons to existing vendors' mics resulted in those vendors pressuring the manufacturers not to sell to the group buy. Very successful pressuring I might add. So yes, we DO want to keep those vendors happy or the group buy won't happen.

Given the very limited number of Chinese mic manufacturers, it's pretty safe to assume that these mics, whatever they are called or branded, will be of at least comparable quality to other mics made by these same manufacturers that are for sale at your neighborhood mic shoppe. And for the price they are offered at here -- jeez, dinner out costs more. :D

I will put a request in for this. What mics does anyone want the schemes for? The fewer, the faster I can get them.

Ok I just emailed my order.
Do I send a paypal payment now or wait until instructed to.
