JTC whats wrong with you? Its not necessary to reply in every post with an insult or attack. Do you act like such an ass IRL?

A massive stretch. Your comparing bush's war mongering to alan hyatts post? [which could still hold merit as far as anyone knows] . You need to relax, we're buying mics, its not that serious.

probably not IRL, some people acts differently on the net.

I would like to commend Alan Hyatt for waiting (whether intentional or not) until the GB ordering and payments were closed before posting his comments. Had he posted prior, this would have been a real shitstorm and may have sunk the ship.

From past experience, I think Alan is an honorable person, as is Chance. Our orders are done, and nothing we say here will have a positive effect on the outcome, and in fact, may have negative consequences in the long run. The outcome of the group buy will be best served if we calmly await the arrival of the merchandise, which I believe will live up to most of our expectations.

thinking ahead

So, we don't know who designed the mic pre's, but at least I know where I'm going to put them... just bought another 6U rack on Ebay. Holiday nights are maybe the only time there aren't six other buyers hovering over the 'bid' button in the last minute of an auction.

So you're saying that when Hyatt called Chance a liar, it was just his "style" of presenting information?

Honestly, I don't understand some of you. Chance invites you guys to get in on this thing. There's really no motivation for it other than kindness. Hyatt calls Chance a liar and none of you condemn him for it. That really sucks.
As I've been trying to point out, we don't see it the same way you seem to. I've been involved in Chance's GBs since day one, and I think he and I know each other rather well (for two guys who have never met face to face anyway). I've been following Alan's companies for several years as well, and I own and appreciate both mics and pres from his brands. I've also followed his postings here on this board (NOT just this thread), and found that he is one of the more valuable contributors. So both of these gentlemen have earned my respect over a period of years.

They do seem to have a difference of opinion here, and yes, they do have different styles of presenting it. I'd like to see them sort it out. It appears to me that your mind is made up, and you don't want anyone providing any additional information that might challenge your well-formed viewpoint. That's fine, I guess, but it's kind of preventing the rest of us from learning what WE need to better understand this apparent conflict.

You have your own style as well, which seems to be mostly made up of repeating over and over "Hyatt called Chance a liar", hoping that the rest of us will eventually "get it". Sorry, but it's not that clear cut for me.

As the designer of a product, you must specify to the manufacturer all the component parts, pots, values of components, brands used for the pots, transformers, power supply, switches, control knobs etc...

That's not actually true. You can specify the exact parts, but with most products, that won't make sense economically. You'll tell them the values and specifications you want and the company building it will use what they can easily and cheaply get. This is a budget preamp, not a 'spare no expense, only the best will do piece of gear'. Chance, along with some others, listened to the sample units and liked what they heard, so had no reason to go further.

A pic of the ENVY from June of 2007 is posted...Kind of familiar isn't it...

Familiar? Not really. That's just a mock up drawing to get an idea of how it would look. I have a mate who could do one like that by morning (and has done so for me). Once again proves nothing.

The Chinese - Well, it seems they will do what they want to do. The picture posted of the black panel, #3 is a photo of the PMI Switcher. Anyone who has been at a trade show at our booth who has listened to our gear will recognize that panel, and for anyone who will be at NAMM next week, I will show you. So they do take other designs they build for companies and look to sell them to others by making a simple change...but let me be clear...It is they that do the change.

It is just a front panel used as a colour sample, not an example of something Chance is talking about selling.

With all this stress, I've had it with GB's as they now are.

I think if the truth be known, this is exactly what Alan is trying to achieve.

holy moly, i've been following this for a while and this is just getting stupid. why don't we all stop accusing each other of all sorts of stuff and just wait.

when the preamps arrive, it will be easy to open them up and determine where the truth lies. end of story. there is no need for this useless bickering. REGARDLESS of the end result, we're getting good units at cost. we win.

One thing seems pretty clear at this point.

This will most likely be the last group buy. There was very little incentive for Chance in all this, other than to feed his altruistic nature. To willingly invite all this stress into one's life like Chance has just wouldn't make sense. Life is hard enough. To take it in the ass just because you are trying to do a good thing...now that would be crazy.

So to all the detractors of these types of amazing opportunities Chance and his merry group of buddies used to provide...congratulations! You've pissed all over a good thing yet again.

F'in unbeliveable.

seriously dude, do you believe everything everyone said? I'll be honest here, Chance's group buy is more like a business, why do you think we had GB over and over again, I'm pretty sure he made "some" profit off this (and he have all the right to be, since he spent the effort/time to conduct this whole thing)... it's probably a win/win situation for both parties (buyer and seller), but don't think for a sec that chance is taking a loss on this, we're probably talking about hundreds of units if not thousands, just a slight loss/gain per unit will equate to quite a bit of money

That's not impossible but probably not for the reasons you have stated.

For quite a while Chance has been making comments that indicate he make take this to the next level..........ie: from importation through to distributors, including o/seas. If that's the case, WTF would he want to continue with the GBs, they will have served his purpose.

Alan, thanks for your info! So, as far as I recall Chance only took credit for the 1073 clone anyway, oddly(perhaps, I'm mistaken--too many pages to sort through to verify, so sorry if i'm incorrect Chance) But there was never much of an explanation about the origin 81 & 84 designs .. whatever... i paid it's done...

anyway, what in your opinion is the best of the 3? the 81, 84 or 73?
And what is the 81 clone? seems it was AB, but from the pics it seems A? yes? what happened? what is this thing? seems great to have a class A 81...maybe?
would be nice to hear from Brian from C-labs also about these designs as my 7602s are amazing.

yeah if i were brian, i wouldn't be so happy about 797 cloning my design and selling 'em off at cost to CL's target demographic....

And how do you suppose Rupert Neve feels? ;)

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't give this Chinese bastard child of a very old design of his a second thought. Not to mention the fact that he's much more interested in and proud of his new designs anyway.

Ode to Gear

It was eerily quiet over at "goupo de buyo". None of the usual banter could be heard this day. No name calling. No slanderous accusations. Just the whirr of the cieling fan, as the members battled a feeling of general malaise waiting for their precious shipment to arrive. A few members scurried about picking up bargains at the gear sale, some posted new recordings from old gear, but a sense of ennui permeated the site. What was worse, the waiting or the wondering? How will the gear sound? When is it going to get here? What's really inside? All the questions had been asked over and over, yet many still sat and wondered, twiddling their fingers in nervous anticipation.
Whirr, whirr goes the cieling fan, round and round, counting the minutes, the days, the weeks...

WOW
been real busy here. On the 29th, I will be doing a session with all TnC mics. I'm going to use the "200" on vox. I will be shooting video too with some mic shots. Anyone know how to put video on you tube?

Ah, so much wisdom here. Really, really funny too.

Chance when you get ready let me know and I will help you put the video on you tube.

Allan, What I wanna know is.... why didn't Studio Projects go through with that product? I think it would have been a big seller, judging solely from that mockup. Weren't people waiting for either the 8 channel version of the budget mic pre, or a more high-end pre from Studio Projects?

And by the way, I own a Joemeek Twin-Q (new version), which I assume at this point was made by 797. If that's the case, I am confident in the TnC pres being of good quality. I am impressed by the workmanship and sound on the TwinQ, and am more than happy with that purchase.

Of interest, I just did a corporate audio gig at a conference for security and encryption professionals with a lot of government agencies present. A large portion of the conference was talking about the massive amount of industrial espionage and intellectual property theft in manufacturing that goes on in China, and how the Chinese government doesn't case because it only makes the U.S. more dependent on China economically. For a second, I kinda felt bad about possibly supporting that, if in fact this design was ripped off from CL. Then I though, "Fuck it." The price I paid for my one preamp will probably pay some worker's salary for a month, so I look at it as charity. :D
