I am still getting the hang of editing in Pro Tools. I have a few questions dealing with the grid itself. Just for simplicity lets say that I have the tempo set to 120bpm and I have the grid divided into eighth notes.

-Is there anyway that I can make the grid lines show up on top of or through my "regions"? The lines are there but they are behind the audio.

-Is there anyway to make tab to transient follow the grid itself. Basically where I could see the time or positioning of each 8th note?

I ask this because I have been quantizing drum tracks (audio, not midi) but I have had sort of a round about way of doing it. I suspect there is a much easier solution. I basically created a click track with the correct subdivisions for each section of the song. Then I bounced the click onto an actual audio track. From there I have the recorded click track as my visual guide. The only problem is that when bouncing the click track the hits never seem to stay in perfect time (its very slight and not noticeable by ear but I am OCD and I would rather have it "perfect as possible" lol.

Can either of the two above things be done?

thanks in advance

I think what you're trying to manually replicate is Beat Detective! This PT feature will automatically cut up your audio in to each drum hit and then quantize them to a strength that you want.

Have a look around, there are a few good tutorials hanging about the web...

Along with what MessianicDreams said, recent versions of protools also have a function called Elastic Audio. Check videos of this out on youtube. It's similar to BeatDetective in operation I believe and also pretty simple. Check it out!

I also don't know how to make the gridlines appear over your waveforms or if it's possible.

Good luck.

Hey guys, I have messed with beat detective as well as elastic audio. The material I am working with is Progressive metal. I found beat detective to work pretty well for more straight forward stuff but it doesn't seem to be able to handle the very busy and not so uniform material as well. Granted I do not claim to be an expert with either program.
The method I am using sounds slow but it is actually pretty quick once you get the hang of it. I was just trying to make better use of the grid itself rather than having to create a "guide" track. Thanks for the responses.

I wish, but the answer is no [AFAIK]. I create a blank track and thats how I reference where the grid lines are. I believe this has been changed in PT 8 from something I read, but can't find the source just this moment.

That's correct, in Pro Tools 8 the regions are somewhat translucent, and you can see the grid beneath; or "through" the region. Very helpful :-)
