GREAT way to get fat drums, fast, with 3 mics...

Bump. This one should stay near the top. Not for the argument at the end, for the info.

I just tried it with 2 mxl 993s as overheads a 57 on the snare and a beta 52 in the kick...It sounds really nice so far...BUT!!!

I need to know how to pan the overheads...because I hope to god its not right down the middle...cuz that sounds like balls...I panned them out a little but I am cautious to go out of phase...tell me how far you guys panned yours!

If you do everything properly there shouldn't be any phase problems. I panned mine maybe about 80%.

AHAHAH!!!! I am saved from the x/y setup! These drums sound amazing!...I am not going to show you...because...I don't play drums...but trust me this is the way to try if youre sick of thin drums...

If you are confused about the setup...here is a video:

recorderman

I used a 57 top snare 58 undersnare, beta52 kick and two mxl 993s for the oh's

NICE!

In general (and I know there are exceptions which is why I'm saying "IN GENEREAL") your OH's will be panned far left and right. That's why you use 2 overheads, for a stereo image. But, like Zacanger, I don't go more than 80% on each side with this configuration. It really seems to widen the drums alot, which is a good thing.

How many moderators are on this BBS? Are they so f***ing lazy to maky this thread a sticky?
Do they ever read the threads here? I think they should give moderators permissions to more people, because it is about two years since someone fist said to make it sticky. Also the not-deleted adverts everywhere are annoying...

I only recorded my own band so far, but I will have my own studio in about a month. I just read through this whole thread beacuse I wasn´t sure how to record the drums, and it really helped me a lot.

sorry for being offtopic, but it seems that Dragon is the only mod here. His last post is from 10/2006, so is he dead or what?
Does anyone here have some contact on him, so he could give mod rights to someone who can do it?

I personally don´t want that job, but I am sure someone on this forum would do it.

Anyone interested, please see this thread

Dragon's the only mod, yeah. He's not dead, he's just busy or whatever. Doesn't check back much.

Maybe Dragon doesn't want us to have fat drums fast. Ever think of that?

Man that's one wicked video. I'm glad someone finally did this. I also use the same technique with two mxl 993 (also known as the 603s), a 58 on snare and a Beta 52 on Bass drum.

I get great results.

I'm not sure how to tell if the mics are "in phase" or not. Also I think bleed might be a good thing if you want a big sound(?). Is the issue of bleed only for individual EQing? Because we only have a mixer and a stereo input to record...also if anyone has any tips for recording drums to a tascam DP-01 or basically any two stereo tracks, lemme know! Also, does anyone know exactly how Dave Grohl got his sound on Nevermind(besides pounding the drums so hard)? All I know is he had some kind of drum tunnel or something. If we could get something close to that sound, that would be awesome.

This is the greatest thread of all time.

Ever since discovering the Recorderman/Glyn Johns technique here, it's all I've used on drums seeing as I still am working with 4 total inputs (Presonus Firebox). And it still works great for me, and on the 3 different kits I've recorded in the past year.

Russtopher, I'm just wondering about how you mix the two overheads with the Firebox? Have you got a hardware mixer running to it, or are you just using whatever software you're recording to?

I use Cubase LE, which came with the Firebox. I use 2 condensers for the overheads (in inputs 1 & 2) and then an SM57 on the snare and a 58 in the kick (into 3 & 4). I usually pan the overheads to about 30 on each side, and that gives a decent stereo spread without being too wide.

Because you lose a little "oomph" with this method since the toms aren't direct mic'd, I'll export the 4 tracks into 1 wav, then re-import the wav into the project, roll off the highs, compress the crap out of the stereo wav, and then bring it up little by little into the mix so I get a little parallel compression going.
