I recently recorded this tune which started as one riff and evolved into a big production. Lots of people have said some of my stuff sounds a lot like Pink Floyd, which I never saw. On this tune, I decided I would embrace my Pinkness, and even made the mistake of listening to Animals a couple times while recording this tune, so it definitely has that feel to it (sound effects and all ;) ).

The song was written for a friend of mine from AcidPlanet who recently lost his uncle to crack addiction.

On that cheery note... lol

Let me know whatcha think!!! Gracias :)

Dude...Awesome song. Definetly Pink Floyd sounding. Right down to the climactic changes..

Good recording too. What equipement do you use? I did notice a little distortion coming from the right channel? On purpose?

Great song..Keep it up.

hi ,

I thought it was slow the first few seconds, but after awhile I got into the groove of it, and I was enjoying it extrememly much as an instrumental, and then the voice came in and I thought "oh, it might spoil everything" but no it did not spoil anything at all. It even made it better.

Its a really good song that I really like, except maybe the telephone ringing, which was not present enough to spoil anything.

as far as the mix, I am not known for ever helping anybody with their mix, but I think the kick could come up a bit.

peace.

LOL - well, now I know why you haven't had many responses - 7000k!

I don't like the sound on the keyboard - it sounds to me like a sound you'd use for something tongue-in-cheek or mock dramatic, which this song definitely isn't. It's the effect you used, isn't it? Was it just a reverb? I like the sound on everything else including the singing, and that guitar playing around 5.30 is the best part of the song for me - lonely, hurt, beyond. The words are clever and very powerful.

What's the effect you used on the vox to make it sound corrugated like that?

A great big song in a minor key that takes as much time as it wants - yeah, I see the Pink Floyd in it. It's your song, though. Really good work. And now for something a little less cheerful? :D

Thanks for the responses guys.

The whole song was recorded on the PC. I think Acid Pro is the only program I used, though I may have used Vegas also. The drums are all Acid loops and samples chopped up.

Dobro, there's actually no keyboard on the song - it's all guitar. That beginning riff is probably what you are talking about. The higher part is doubled an octave lower. I think I actually added some extra reverb on that, which may be what you are thinking of as far as the effect you don't like.

All the guitar and the bass were recorded direct through a Yamaha DG Stomp. The only other processing on the guitar was on the solo at the end, which was run through the Waves harmonizer plug in, giving it that kind of metallic edge.

The vocals were all recorded with a Rode NT2 run through a Joe Meek VC6. I am not quite sure what you mean about the "corrugated" sound, but I was trying to be as raspy as I could through most of it. ;) There's also a softer, almost falsetto vocal part that kind of covers the melody and a bit of harmony, and I think I also ran a little of that through a harmonizer that adds a 5th or something. (It's been a while since I mixed this. :) )

Oh yeah, and if anyone else is scared off by the downbload size, you can always stream it either hi-fi or lo-fi. lol

Got weed?

LoL...this music reminds me of the old day's when I...no just kidding:rolleyes:. yeah this is real floydish type material no doubt! The mix you have going sounds pretty damn good(lot better than my stuff). Liked all the effects you had in the mix of things this type song really starves for that sorta stuff.I was raised on floyd so I really like this...David (Gilmer)

Yup, very Floyd. Good sounds all around. With the headphones on I hear some "break-up" distortion in places... sounds like you might have hit the compressor too hard or it couldn't handle the low-end. Another good tune... "Gladiolas" and "Waiting for the Sun" still get some Winamp time too.

Thanks guys... PG, I think you're right about the distortion. I am still working on my "mastering skills," which have a lot to be desired. I do tend to overcompress, and I need to work on that. It is also the low end, which seemed to be oushed too hard with the way the bass was recorded. It almost works and sneaks by, but it is right on the edge in some spots.

Thanks for the feedback guys!!!

EDIT: Actually, I just listened to the "bare wav" - uncompressed, and it probably sounds better than the final one I have posted. I think I need to re-evaluate my mastering techniques. :(

One thing that has been helping me with the nickel mastering I do is making a couple of passes through the compressor with less aggressive settings (when I want aggressive compression). Ratio of no more than 2:1 with only a few dB of reduction on each pass. Attack between 15-25 ms and release 800-2000ms... it all depends. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I'm getting a lot less "pumping" now.

*bump*

The board is being wonky and didn't register my post, even though it did add it.

Something Cryptic

KaBudokan-

Hey, I liked your tune, Addiction... but I fell in love with the track called, "Something Cryptic"... that kicks ass!! You called it "a mess"... man, that's an awesome mess!! Great work!

Finaly got around to download.

Really nice, sounds like you had a lot of fun with the guitar part, very relaxed sounding.

Was this a late night recording? It sure sounds like it.

Great work!!

Thanks GT!!!

Just for reference, I did post a newer mix of the tune. I backed off the compressor a bit and I think it helped clear up a few of the issues. It's not pushing the compressor as hard, and it sounds cleaner, though not quite as "hot" of a signal.

And yes, GT, I think that is pretty much all a late night recording. (Most of my stuff is actually... lol)
