I finally made my decision and bought a at4033 at Mars. I had them price match the $299 deal that 8th street music had on the 4033 w/shockmount. I did a shootout with an akg414,akg3000b,at4060,mxl,and a shure...not sure what model it was though. The at4033 was not only more accurate sounding but also had a stronger signal. The other mics were kind of dissappointing. I went in and really ignored prices. Strictly going off of my ears. The 4033 really shined at capturing the acoustics of the room at mars too! The akg414 sounded really dull to my ears. The rest of the mics sounded like...just that...a mic. They all eq'd the voice a certain way instead of reproducing an accurate true signal of the source.

I am so excited! I am using it tomorrow on a little demo that a friend of mine wants to record. I will report later on my findings in a real world scenario.

The at4060 actually sounded just as good but was more expensive and had more features that I didn't think/feel i needed at this point.

Anyone know of a great sounding kick drum mic? I hear the akg egg shaped one is good.

Sorry for the pointless post but I really am excited about my first condenser mic. which reminds me...when would you normally use the -10db switch. I find that I need to have it on because otherwise the signal is way loud! HOw about the rolloff switch?

Hey. Way to pull the trigger. I hear nothing but good things about that mic, so Im sure it will serve you well.

As for the kick drum. I just bought a Shure Beta 52 for $160. It pretty much kicks ass. I know Recording Engineer and Sonusman on here like it, and RE seems to like it better than the AKG D112, that egg shaped on as you said. I really like it, im glad I threw down for it. Its worth checking out. Audio Technica makes one, the ATM 25, which goes for a little less, but seems to have favorable reviews. That might be worth looking into as well.

Ditto for "Got It". I recently bought an AT 4033 and a Mindprint En-voice pre-amp/compressor/equalizer unit and it's a match made in heaven. It's the only way i have been able to accurately reproduce the natural sound of a steel body resonator guitar at home(miked from about 4 feet away). What i record is exactly what the guitar sounds like to human ears and you can't get any better than that. Close miking an acoustic guitar, however sounded crappy to me but vocals were so much improved that my non-musical tonedeaf girlfriend who hasn't a clue what all the electronic equipment i have actually does(she's a blonde, you know), said "hey, that sounds a lot better. what did you do?" I guess this a pointless post also, but at least anyone who reads this can figure out that you won't hear too many people say an AT 4033 sounds bad. Actually i've never heard anyone but there's always somebody..............
