Got a Tascam US-1200 for tinkering by myself...now what?

OK, I've been a drummer for 20 years and I've dabbled in a few recording devices. I wanted something I could just shoot some drum tracks to the computer or add drums to existing vocal and guitar tracks and that's about it. It's a great product and everything is crystal clear and nice but I'm having latency issues. Is it even going to be possible to listen to a vocal/guitar track and drum over top of it at the same time and record it? It seems convoluted and cumbersome. Right now I have Reaper/Audacity/Cubase and just really don't know what I'm doing. I feel stupid, though I'm definitely not. Could someone simplify some things for me please?

What are you running this interface and software on? I mean your computer?

You have the ability within your DAW (Cubase/Reaper) to adjust the buffer/latency settings. Depending on the power of your computer and how you have it set up it is usually quite possible to get what you desire.

It is not so easy to simplify without knowing what you are using and how.

I may be able to give some help and more exact directions if I know what you are running as far as OS and computer.

Sorry about that. I'm running Windows 8.1 on a AMD FX6300 3.50ghz processor, 8 GB RAM. Hope that's sufficient. I really appreciate you replying, it just seems I need a bunch of laymen's terms when it comes to adjustments and doing what I'm trying to do.

Then Google how to change latency of your interface (US1200) in the software (Cubase/Reaper/Auacity).

I can give exact directions for Cubase if you wish.
