I just got my new computer (3.4G P4 1G RAM & all the trimmings!) I imported my other hard drive that has all of my Sonar & music related stuff on it and installed Sonar2 on the new HD. In order to install it I had to change my direct X settings back to version 8.1 and then switch it forward to version 9. I had to do this on my other computer as well.

The problem is, is that even though Sonar is installed on my computer, when I click the icon (desktop or programs menu) NOTHING HAPPENS! The hourglass icon comes on for a few seconds and then goes away...instead of opening the program. I have tried a number of things to remedy this, ie. switch the direct X version back to 8.1, re-install the software, change other settings dealing with Sonar.

Is there something i'm missing? Could it be a prob with the new comp? (All other programs work) I still have all of my Sonar related files stored on my other (slave/storage) HD...could that be a problem...i don't know why it would be. I know the software is not corrupted, because I loaded it onto a different computer that has never had it on there and it worked just fine.

Anybody got any ideas...?

I have just recently installed SOnar to my new XP machine and had the DirectX9 problem as well. I don't think you should delete DirectX9.... you should use the patch available in cakewalk site.

Here's the info(From cakewalk.com):
Problem:
After installing Microsoft DirectX 9, most Cakewalk products will not install properly. You may receive an error message stating "You must install DirectX 8 to proceed" or "You are not running Windows 95. Please upgrade to Win 98, ME, XP..." Both errors are caused by the presence of Microsoft DirectX 9 on your system. We have learned that since the installers built into several Cakewalk products were designed with earlier versions of DirectX in mind, they have a problem when DirectX 9 is detected.
The problem affects installation only. If you've already installed one of our products such as SONAR or Pyro 2003, they will function correctly. The program operation is NOT affected by the presence of DX 9. If your Cakewalk product is installed and running, you do not need to do anything. Enjoy the software.
Solution:
By following the steps below it is possible to install any of our products on a PC where DX 9 is present.
1. Open your CD drive and insert the installation CD of the Cakewalk product you're trying to install.
2. Download this file. DirectXUtility.exe Save it to your Desktop
3. Double-click DirectXUtility.exe to begin the installation.
NOTE - The utility does NOT actually revert you to DX 8 or uninstall DX 9.

I don't believe my problem has to do with the direct X issue, because I already have it installed on my computer. The problem is that Sonar doesn't open when I click on it or try to run the program.

The direct X fix is as simple as changing a number in the registry, which I have done before on my other computer as well as this new one.

Is there any other possibilities for my problem?

Thanks for the reply Leeking.

Can you just track the shortcut? I mean, right click on the shortcut, open it's properties, and see where it leads you? Maybe you installed SONAR not in it's default directory, but I never heard this problem tought...

What if you run it right from the .exe file on Sonar installation folder?

I've made sure that the program is installed in the right area...I have un-installed and re-installed multiple times now. Each time the program installs with no problems...then I get my hopes up that it's going to work. Then.....it doesn't. D'OH!!!

The only thing i can think of is that it doesn't like my other HD that has all of my pre-existing sonar material on it. I keep getting a message like: Windows cannot find the file "blahblahblah" Try the start menu and search for it.

I don't need to search for it...i see it and all the other files and projects in the folders. My audio data folder has all of the files in it as well. Even the files that are in the "orignial" cakewalk folder that gets put on during installation don't work...with the same message as above.

I'm at a loss. Anybody else got any ideas?

Sorry about the bump...I need to figure this out so I can start working again.

I would guess

there is an issue with the hard drive you installed. If the shortcut was no good it would tell you. If it was a soundcard issue it would at least open the program,it just would not play. I would put the computer back to its origonal state when you bought it and try again.I would then load Sonar, try to open it,then if its a go import the old sonar projects from the old hard drive.

I put the computer back to its original config, with only the main (new) HD. I re-installed sonar, but I am still having the same problem. The program will not run. When I try to open any of the sample files...it tells me it can't find them and to go to the start menu and do a search. WTF??? All I can say is AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies, i was really hoping this was going to fix my problem, but now i'm even more confused! If that wasn't the problem...then what else could it be?

All help is exetremely appreciated. Any other ideas?

Not sure what this all means? Are you able to open the Sonar program, but just not able to load the sample files?

In other words, what happens when you start Sonar? Do you get to the quick start menu?

From your description it simply sounds like Sonar is looking in the wrong place for the file(s). However, I'm not sure I am understanding you correctly.

Sonar will not open. The program will not do anything...I click the icon, which should bring the program up (launch, open, load) the hourglass symbol shows for a second (like it's going to work) and then it goes away and nothing happens.

The program has yet to open...even when I install it asks me: read the read me file, put icon on desktop, launch sonar. I say yes...and sonar does not launch. It tells me: this is the first time your running sonar on this system, it goes thru a setup and migration thing and should bring up the program...and nothing happens.

Then I look in the program files, find the cakewalk/sonar folder...i see all of the files that concern sonar (sample content, fx, etc.) I click on some of the sample files and templates to see if sonar will open them...and i get a message saying that they cannot be found...click start menu and try a search.

OK, try this.

1. Uninstall Sonar completely. You should be able to use the Sonar uninstaller to do this.

2. Manually delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI from the SONAR directory (in fact you can probably delete the entire Sonar directory, unless you have something there you need saved).

3. Run Rededit and backup your registry. (registry menu > export registry file)

4. While still in Regedit, delete the following Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software

5. Reboot the computer and make sure nothing extraneous is running. No virus software, etc. (Control-Alt-Delete and use Task Manager to end tasks.)

6. Reinstall Sonar.

Hi,

I don't think it is a Sonar problem but more on your HD that you just took from a computer to another one... It doesn't work like that. You have to format that HD. So I suggest you copy those files on another HD then format then replace everything on your old HD.

Thanks for the replies. The problem had to do with my video card. I had to disable my ATI Rage Theater audio drivers. I'm up and running again! Thanks everybody.
