Goog small amp for recording metal

I'd still be interested in the poll thing with the same riff played over multiple amps and modellers. I'd be happy to do some recording, but I own mostly tube amps. If anyone is still interested, let me know. I don't have a website, but can possibly email the files? I really don't know much about this file sharing stuff, but I'm sure someone knows. I think it would be neat to do a 15-20 amp showdown on a website. People can choose which one is paired with which amp and after they choose they get to see which ones are really which.

Here are the amp tones I can provide:

Marshall 100watt super lead
1965 Bassman
1968 Bassman
Blues Junior
Hod Rod DeVille
Peavey Butcher
ZVex Nano Head
JC-120
Line6 POD (whichever models we decide on)

What might be neat would be to send all "real" amps through the same cabinet (I have 1x12, 2x12, or 4x12)

Another matter would be guitars. It would be best to use one guitar, or one type of guitar.

I'm still going to do this this weekend. I'm going to record a DI guitar and then re-amp it through my amps and modelers. I'll use the same cab and signal chain for each amplifier as well. I figure after people pick apart the tones, they might actually be able to point out specific qualities that they like or dislike about them. At that point to anybody who can't tell the difference anyway, I'll reveal which is which.

Would anybody prefer this be done in a mix of drums and bass?

I'm sorry..perhaps I shouldn't have said "need"...
I just don't know how to aim for anything but the pinnacle, it's hard for me to understand aiming for anything less. Also, "expensive" does not need to be in the equation. There are plenty of places where you could drop a couple hundred dollars on a decent amp and be good to go, especially a used amp. I bought my first tube amp (a 50 watt Marshall) for 300 bucks years ago and i still use it sometimes. I never told him he needed to go buy a $3000 Mesa half stack.....
Besides, I think a good amplifier is more important in a live situation than when recording so this logic does not need to be applied only to one's recording practices. And I haven't even mentioned the impact that a great tone will have on your playing.....

I think all clips should be solo'd guitars, no other music. I know it doesn't give a sense of how it sits in a mix but I want to hear the amp, not the mix.

no. None of those clips are with the dualfex. I don't even have it yet..

Yeah I actually don't like the tone of that black metal riff. I changed my black metal tone since then. I should post it. Just havent recorded anything with it yet.

The first tube amp that I ever bought was a JCM 900. The first expensive tube amp that I bought was a JCM 800. I have since started using a Peavey 5150 II and that is my amp of choice now.

By the way I'm about to start a new thread with the tube vs. SS vs. modeler thing.....

Try not to laugh, but I have owned a Crate VC508 for a couple years now and either record straight to the recorder or the board. I've even played around with mic placements in front of the little bugger and am pretty impressed with the sound. Best little all-tube amp I have heard for around $200. Before that I was playing solid state but through a little ART 1-channel tube pre-amp and it warmed up the sound very nicely. Now I use it to record the vocs and it works great there too. If amyone would like to experiment with the warmth a tube can add to your sound and have lots invested in a monster solid-state rig, I would highly suggest adding one of the ART pre-amps. Just my 2-cents ...

Hey guys ive ben enjoying reading all your comments.

I gotta say im tube amp guy all the way for live playing. but I go with direct just out of pure laziness at home. I dont think it sounds better, but like i said, just less to deal with going direct.

However if i was in a pro studio doing a top notch recording project, my gut says mic up a tube amp, maybe even blend in some direct tracks as well. do whatever it takes to make it sound good. Be open to trying a different sound.

If someone wants to post some songs or samples. Email them to me direct with all the info, ill compile them for everyone to listen to. I will not say how any of them are recorded. then everyone can vote on them, and when we're all done, ill reveal the sound sources.

let me know if this works for anyone. I will treat them with much respect and confidenciality, with all respect to copywrites and all that stuff. If you could, please keep them down to no longer than a minute.

whoops, if you guys want specific rules on what should be on the tracks, you can decide. please decide before you send them.

Or howabout i mke a few rule suggestions. I guess we all are on a quest to learn from each other, so i guess if you have a technique that works well, do it and we all can marvel at it. If that means you triple track and stack your tracks or whatever, then do it and share the knowledge of how you did it. that way we all cab get an idea for different sounds and myb use for ourselves.

* no longer than a minute.
* only guitar recorded
* list what kind of guitar, pickups,amp, preamp,tracking device9what you used to record it on)
* Clean and distorted sounds.
* leads are optional.
