Goog small amp for recording metal

I've got an idea. Tonight I'll record some DI guitar. Then I can take the DI guitar and re-amp it through both a Tube Amp, a SS amp, and a modeler.
That way you can get the exact same performance through each medium. How much more fair can it get?

no...I was "joshing" you. That's were I got the "tune"....from that "head-cuttin' duel'. ..... as I said, thought appropriate for this thread! Vai pretty much dropped my jaw when I first watched that movie.


btw... the band Cream, did an [extremely]popular song called "Crossroads" back in their day.. a 10 minute power trio jam, if you will.

I smell a poll. I can contribute to the DI category, but I sadly lack a tube amp.

I know everybody's going nuts with the tube vs. modeler vs. solid state thing but, I just want to simply give my answer to the original question.

I bought a Fender Blues Jr. and a Boss MT-2 and I get a totally usable metal tone from this little combo. Less than $600 and I have a ton of tonal possibilities. Even a solid state amp and a good stompbox can get you there. You just have to spend a good bit of time tweaking the knobs instead of just putting the bass and treble on 10 and the middle on 0 and expecting instant tonal eutopia.

Good tone takes work.

Oh yeah and to the originator of this thread. Look at some used line 6 combo's. Some people hate them but I've seen several pictures of Reznor using the flextone in his studio. That amp is kind of like an amp modeler and combo rolled into one. You can get a used one for 400 bucks.

Actually, those little Fender amps are pretty nice. I like the Deluxe Reverbs, but for $749, they're a little expensive to me for what you get.

You know of all the mic and pre tests I've seen I've never seen a guitar/amp test. I know there are a ton of variables but i think it would be cool if everyone who can, post a clip of their amp and guitar in their room. It could be somewhat helpful to people and would just be cool I think.

my goodness... thread got interesting real fast

here is a modeler... NOT my GT-8 because it's at my rehersal place.
Howver in this clip, this modeler cost me $100, and I am using an 88 Amer Strat. After a bit, I'll devulge what "black box" I used here.

Some good ideas! I remember from a while back, there was a website with 10 different amps and 10 clips and you tried matching them up. It would be cool if we could do something similar to that, maybe not with just one person contributing. I've got shit tons of old vintage tube amps, a blues junior, ZVEX nano, and a POD. I can try and help if someone wants. This sounds like fun!

You will get better tones if you mic up a nice amp. Unfortunately, even the "small" tube amps aren't exactly cheap. But follow metalhead's advice and save your pennies. If you buy another cheap amp, you will be back here within 6 months posting about how you want your guitar to sound better.

NO NO NO. I can see where that could've sounded like I was wanting pics, but I was just talking about audio clips. You know like this is how a jcm900 sounds in my room thru a 1960 cab with a 57. You know all the different variables from person to person. Looking at pics of guitar amps is like looking at a picture of a band, usually boring as shit and somewhat cheesey. Seriously don't most "rockers" look cheesey as hell in their press pics.

Hi I am new to recording and would like to try an amp out for it instead of using my vamp2. I already have a behringer v tone 210 amp which I use sometimes. And recently i've been using it with the vamp2 and miking it. But I would like to try something else. Maybe a tube amp? I don't know. But i'd like to try out a new amp. I don't have too much money to spend and i'm just looking for a real small one. Just for recording. What would you suggest? Also what would you recommend I do to get a better sound out of my vamp2? Do you guys find that hooking it up to an amp and then miking the amp works better than just recording direct with it? Also, would a maximizer help? Anything information you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.
