What are some good things to use? I've been useing Carpet pading which works good, but looks like shit. Is there something just as good or better than carpet pading that looks good and is real cheap. I just got a new studio building and i'm going to be doing 4 rooms. 8' x 10', 5' x 5', 10' x 25' and a 8' x 12'

Thanks

Zeke,

One good and versatile acoustic material is rigid fiberglass. Carpet padding is not useful because it affects the high frequencies only, and music rooms need broadband absorption.

For some good explanations of the issues and solutions see my Acoustics FAQ:

www.recording.org/users/acoustics

And also see John Sayers' great info on the SAE site:

Carpet padding is a waste of time and a possible fire hazard. Get some OC703 rigid fiberglass panels.

is that enough

if i'm just doing vocals in the booth, is OC 703 enough?

what thickness should i buy?

1inch
1.5
or 2?

will 2inch thick absorb all the frequencies that 1 inch does and then additional lower ones, making 2 "better" overall for absorbing both high, mid, and low frequencies.

I want to make sure i am understanding this correctly

thanks!

Solit,

Yes. Vocals don't need much low frequency absorption. One-inch 703 is fine.

Yes, exactly. Even two-inch 703 is not suitable for bass trapping, but you do understand the concept. I urge you to read the two links I referenced above. They contain a lot of useful information.
