Good reverb VSTs?

Reaverb and whatever impulse files I find on the web. Convolution reverb is the way to go IMO.

Yeah, as I said to JD, I didn't have any impulses... so he's given me a link - I'll see how that works!
Cheers

Lexicon PCM series reverbs are really sweet. Not inexpensive but worth every penny, IMO.

I agree with simman. Best natural sounding verb plugin I've heard. You can also do some not so natural stuff if thats what you're into.

I've never used SIR, just SIR 2. IIRC SIR is quite different from SIR 2 (latency, no HD IR or pictures).

I use SIR most of the time and don't find it problematic for mixing. Latency has never been an issue either unless I insert it during tracking, which is never. If I need a tracking reverb I'll usually use Roomworks for the time being. Reverence also works but the reason why I always use SIR is because I like the fact that when you select an impulse, it lists the rest of the impulses contained within that folder. It just makes it easier to audition different impulses. Reverence makes the process a pain the ass.

Incidentally, anyone ever A/B'ed different impulse processors? They all sound different with identical impulses. No shit. Try it some time.

Anyhoo, I'm also a convolution guy for most applications. There are times that you need that alogrithmic sound, which is where the Lexicons, etc, come in handy but I've got impulses for them, too, which is kinda ironic in a geeky way. I've collected many, many impulses libraries for many years and have amassed collections from almost every major reverb processor available. The complete list of my impulses from reverb units is as follows (I also have many impulses for real spaces, special FX, unconventional spaces, and other hardware):

  • Alesis Microverb4 (Rooms)
  • Bricasti M7 (Akousticas)
  • EMT 244 and 250
  • Eventide Eclipse
  • Eventide H3000
  • Eventide Snareverbs
  • Kurzweil KSP8
  • Lexicon PCM90
  • Lexicon 200
  • Lexicon 480L
  • Lexicon 960
  • Lexicon LXP15 Opus
  • Lexicon MPC60
  • Lexicon MPX500
  • Lexicon PCM70
  • Lexicon PCM91
  • Orban Spring
  • Prosoniq Reverbs
  • Quantec Yardstick
  • Roland R-880 Lee Quintana Presets
  • Roland R-880 Stock Presets
  • Roland RE201 Space Echo
  • TC Electronic M3000
  • Yamaha A3000
  • Yamaha SPX90

Cheers :)

It's just a standard business machine in a smallish box - didn't think about PCI cards when I bought it - so I really don't know. I'm stilll assuming I'm right however, I don't normally miss detail like that... so we'll see!

THe low profile cards are used in rack units and thin boxes. Low profiles are about 2.5" high where a normal height is about 4.2". The requirement for LP will often be noted somewhere inside the case or you can check the room available or the size of other installed cards.

As far as Firewire goes, if you don't have a 1394 (firewire) port onboard the machine already you can get a PCIe card in standard or low profile. I had a HP rack at one time that needed low profile and bought a Belkin FW card that worked well. You just want to make sure the chipset on the FW card is TI (Texas Instruments), there are some with VIA chipsets that don't work well with Audio applications for some reason.

Thanks. I've worked out with the local store that I can get one, possibly two SOLO UAD cards into the machine if I want to. At this stage, seeing my processor's hardly breaking out of a slow walk, I'm going to try some of the plug-in options. I have Valhalla demo, but haven't installed it yet, and a few of the other usual suspects.
My main issue with most of them is that you just get virtual knobs, which appear uncalibrated, to twirl. I want to read and control the actual settings via numbers - just the way I work...:D

Most plugins I use show a number alongside each knob or slider - clicking on the number allows you to type the number for more precise control. Also, holding shift or control (I forget which) while sliding/twirling makes it move slower for more precision (this is the case for Cubase and Reaper).

Another useful tip... thanks johnny... I'm using Glace at the moment and the wet/dry knobs are tiny and really hard to control with any accuracy via mouse... i'll give it a try later. Cheers.

Yeah, sometimes you have to double click. Double the work.

Cheers :)

Some of this might be down to Reaper as well - I find that fancy VST plugin interfaces don't run as smoothly as they do in Cubase, so knobs and sliders can be a bit tricky.

I like the CSR models from IK Multimedia - and they are all now 64 bit

Late to the party because I was back in hospital for a bit, but I suggest you persist in teaching yourself Glaceverb. It's the only 3rd party VST verb I presently have on my DAW and I use it a LOT alongside the native Audition 'verbs.

Now that I've learnt to "send" in Reaper, I'm much happier with Glace Bobbsy... I liked the sound, it was just the tiny wet/dry knobs that were driving me spare... :thumbs up:

And can you stop heading back to hospital? Get well!

Also found EpicVerb which sounds quite good, and worked out the ReaVerb convolution stuff from the links that johnny deep provided.

My next question will be "How do I decide which reverb to use? ...":laughings:

I already have too many and I'm not one to get bogged down with too many choices so whatever works best will win... that would appear to be the Reaverb convolution stuff, but early days...

Hey Armistice - so you got the true stereo reverb thingy working - sounds great as a send channel with the Bricasti impulses, doesn't it? Save it as an FX chain so you don't got to mess with the mixer pins all the time. I've saved an eq after the mixer as well for easy eq'ing of the reverb channel.

Nah, haven't quite gone that far into it, but I have the impulses loaded up (there's like a million of them!) and I've worked the basics out on ReaVerb... gonna get back to the true stereo thing maybe tomorrow night - I'll read up on that link you gave me... sounds interesting!

Thanks for the tip on the impulses too. Awesome stuff... cheers.

In case you fancy a shortcut, I've uploaded my vox reverb chain to Dropbox: -

I guess it might give you an error as your impulse files will be in a different place - you'll need to load an impulse into each of the L & R ReaVerb. Note that I've got a ReaEQ already setup in there - you'll probably want to adjust or remove this to your requirements.
