My old Sony MDR headphones has broke and I'm looking for a new set which is not expensive (up to 50$) but still have as much accurate sound as it could get (for mixing)

and suggestions ?

1 - you won't get shit for $50....

2 - you don't want to mix with headphones anyways....

3 - save up for a pair of Yorkvilles or Tannoy Proto-Js..................

I don't speak for the Bear, but I think he meant that you don't want to mix with headphones. At least not solely.

Oh yeah, I forgot I had a suggestion. Koss makes a model called the 40 or something. Cost about fiddy bux at Rat Shack. You could do much worse. Don't try mixing on them or any cans.

OK it is me not being clear...

I didn't mean to actually mix using a 50$ pair of course,
I need them for ocassional listening and sessioning,
but they have to be more flat sounding than the sony ...

This is what I ment, of course I'm not gonna mix using a 50$ pair !!
:-)

DOH!!!

Fixed it... ;)

Blue Bear--whats the story on the Tannoy Proto-J's? If you'd mix with them, I'd take that as a strong reccomendation.

I had a pair as a second reference for a while - they weren't bad at all... and for someone on a budget, they'll do in a pinch....
... but I did end up replacing them with the Yorkvilles for secondary monitors...

So I'd recommend the Yorkvilles first -- better overrall balance, but the Proto-Js are a workable budget pair too....

Someone preferring one over the other is simply a matter of preference but both will get the job done....!

Blue--thanks for that reply. A couple more quick questions. What do you like better about the Yorkvilles? Also, where could I find a pair? Canadian company, I believe?

I have a friend on the board here who wants to buy some studio monitors and I doubt hes gonna want to spend $1000 or more, so I'm looking for something decent for him in a lesser price range.

Oh yeah--what are your main reference monitors these days? Do you still use the KRK's?

KRK V8s!!!! Yeah... that's what I'M talkin' about!!!!

heh-heh....!

The biggest diff I noticed between the Yorkies and the Tans was the Yorkies seem better balanced overall - usable low-end and clean high-end with a solid and present mid-range.

The Protos had the mids and highs covered but were slightly bass-shy.... the highs were also slightly edgy in a NS-10 kinda way.... which is probably why I replaced them -- I HATED NS-10s! ;)

Yorkville is a Cdn company, but I know they're available in the US too....

Blue--Thanks so much for the insight. I will pass the info along.

As for me, I want a a pair of those KRK V-8s myself. Every time I see them, I start reaching for my credit card! :D Damn, its always something!

Hows the new studio coming along?

I would fork out at least $100 for a descent pair. Especially for comfort. If your gonna get phones, get a good set that will last.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD202, new in box never opened, for $30 shipped, or a pair of HD 212's new in box never opened for $50 shipped... act quickly as ebay beckons...
Peace,
Paul

I beleive John's in the final design stages....! Construction won't start before the end of November.......!

I can't wait! ;)

how about the KRK V4's? I'm on a budget (read, I'm poor). Does anybody know if these are any good? I've been reading as much as possible on this board on monitors, and I think I've come to the conclusion I just need to save some money. I can spend about $300 on monitors, maybe a little more, does anybody have a suggestion? I have a small studio and don't need a whole lot.

Not so much a complaint as an observation. Has this thread been hijacked or what?!

You're only a $1 more than Musicians Friend :D

tack on another $7.00 for shipping and yeah, I would be only $6 LESS than musicians friend... ha!

I just looked... they are $30 at MF, too, and they charge $5.95 for shipping. So yeah, I am STILL $6 cheaper.
