Good gain staging???

Hey guys,
I had this thread on newbies but no one was really hanging around, so I'll try here. But, to be nice, I did delete the thread from the newbies section

Okay,

I've read some stuff on this, and I'm thinking I get it, but maybe I don't. Anyone who can help...feel free.

For my mixer, it seems like they tell us to turn the gain down, then the channel fader and output fader to 0db. This is where I get lost...wouldn't it not show on the meters if the gain is all the way down?

What I'm thinking is, I'm supposed to turn the two faders to "unity" setting...which is what? Around 7, is that right? Would my mixer manual tell me where this is? By the way, I'm only using my mixer as a preamp until I get the preamp in that I ordered. Then, am I supposed to turn up the gain until the meters read 0 db, or as close to it? Or do I try to get them to rest at -10db if the nominal output is -10db?

I'm sorry if I'm an idiot, but I'd love to understand this so I'm not wasting all the money I just spent.

Also, then, when I take the output into my Layla24 breakout box, is that what is controlling the meters in Sonar (or any other software)? There are no meters on the box itself. I guess what I'm asking is...do I need to mess with any levels on my stock card that came with the laptop...or am I bypassing that by selecting the Layla over my crap card wherever I can within sonar and deselecting the stock card, and recording through the Layla's inputs?

So, uh, I guess pretty much I was right in the first place.

Tubedude...you made me go read a whole other page! Kidding. I say that, cause I don't know how to make those smileys you guys put in your messages. Now, maybe someone will route me to another message that tells me how to do this...


Actually, I did already think I got it. Worked great for me at home, but the reading was good for me!
