i have an RNC as well as a few plug-in comps that i like (C1, RCL). other than the standard (LA-2A, 1176), what are some good compressors that you guys like (colored/transparent/optical/etc)?

as far as EQ's i only use plug ins (waves REQ, and Q10). what are some nice rack EQ's i could look at?

if you know the approximate prices of the gear that would be helpful too. thanks.

I cant even afford to look at one but all the big dawgs love the Distressor.....

All of the GML stuff is amazing, in the $5,000 range. I want an 8200 EQ more than almost any piece of gear out there.

The Distressor is great, at about $1,550.

For compressors, the only ones in my rack (beside the RNC) are a pair of Crane Song Trakkers ($3900 for the pair). As far as EQs, I use a Z-Systems Q2 (digital stereo parametric $2500), a pair of Speck ASCs (analog mono parametric $1100 for the pair). I also have a Crane Song Ibis on order (stereo analog parametric $4500). These are the units I voted for with my wallet...

That's kind of an open ended question. There are numerous good comp from vintage Fairchilds to an RNC.

So limiting to my home recording context, the following has proven to be cool:

Speck ASC: it's the RNC of EQ. I have the transformerless version and it's clean and transparent.

Ashly SC-50: Cheap but a really, raelly cool compressor sometimes.

Aphex 651: Surprisingly clean and fast compressor. Dirt cheap used too.

Rane DC24: Works great as a dual band comp/limiter with decent noise gating on bass or guitar. Especially good on DI'ed slap bass.

I have UREI1176 but you know about that. I find that the EQ on my Avalon VT737SP is always worth a mention too.

i know this is an open ended question, but i want to know about all types of comps and eqs in various price ranges. and i like that you only commented on what you have used.

i've heard good things about symetrix. has anyone used them? what do you think? colored/transparent/in the middle? what sort of sound?

thanks
