good combo amp under $600

i wasn't the one that said bandits have better wood. I think that was speedeamon....He's was talking about build quality, not musical resonance...like tonewood on a guitar. The bandits are built out of heavier duty materials than the valvestate.

there isn't another company that will give you more bang for the buck than peavey IMO

My original statement was that if you can't get a good tone out of a (transtube) bandit, you don't know how in the hell to tweak an amp. I have heard alot of bandits kicking ass onstage.....fantastic tone. One of the reginal bands that have a huge following in this area is The Dealers. Thier guitar player plays through a transtube series bandit and I don't see how anyone could ask for better tone than he gets. I get great tone out of mine. You CAN get a shitty tone out of it if you try real hard though LOL

That's right. As I said before:
"...Oh, some folks should try SS too, instead of copying the big boys' opinion of 'tubes are the only way to go'. Like Jimi said, first learn to know what a amp can do or can't do. When you can get great tone out of a SS-amp, you'll probably can get a great tone from a tube-amp too. Vice versa it doesn't always work...."

I just re-read the whole thread, and it looks to me, both Griffinator and Jrlemonz are only listening to themselves, and skipping jimistone's and my (jimi, it's SpeeddEmon BTW ;) ) objective results.

To make it short, both Jimi and I said:
  • Peavey makes far more rugged, better built amps in it's low-end price range than both Fender and Marshall do
  • The new Bandit with transtube is a much more versatile amp than any Valvestate
  • Yes, we agree that a lot of (if not all)tube amps sound better, but they won't cost ya <$600. In that price range the Bandit 112 (with transtube) will offer the best value for money

Now....if both Griffinator and Jrlemonz would take about 5 minutes of their precious gear-snob's (no offense dudes, ;) ) time and re-read the whole enchilada here, I think some mixed thoughts would clear up a bit.

cheerz and goodbye.

NO OFFENSE? You're just a dumbass. End of that story. Play what you want, I couldn't care less, but I AM going to argue with a point that I believe to be wrong. BTW - I HAVE played new Bandits (and also old Banidts, and about the entire line of shitty Peavey SS Amps, ie - Audtion 110, Special 212, and the rest of the bunch), I use one every Saturday when I teach guitar lessons (a TRANSTUBE with a Sheffield), and the thing just sounds like shit. For a sound like indiefolk wanted, the Bandit is not the best choice. It may be more durable, but it doesn't have the tone he wants.

Jake

its strange that a bandit sounds like shit for you.....but alot of other people can get great tone out of it.....maybe its you. Like I said...you can get a shitty tone out of ANY amp.

You could probably get someone that konws what their doing to teach you how to get an amp sounding good...ask around.

jrlemonz

Maybe Jimi and I should get a clue, but it seems you need tolose tha attitude, bro!

And accusing me of being an amp snob because I don't like the sounds that come out of a particular amp isn't an attitude?

Grif

Like you've said before, you haven't tried the new Bandits yet. But anyway, I was pointing more at jrlemonz, not you. You seem more open minded to me....

i haven't accused anyone of being a gear snob...hell, im a gear snob about some things. Like guitars, The only guitar that i care to play is a strat...i've had a les paul, i've had a vintage gretch, and other assorted guitars...and to me a strat is the only guitar there is. So i guess im a gear snob about other guitars, but I know that a strat isn't very good for the grungy type of distortion that the metal bands have now days. You have to have humbucing tone for that. I mainly play blues and I don't like humbuckers for blues.....the same may be true for a bandit amp....it might not be the best amp for over the top distortion (i don't know...its not my bag)...but I know DAMN good and well that a bandit sounds good for blues and classic rock (with a strat plugged into it anyway)
peace

using a strat and a peavy amp doesnt make you a gear snob. It seems alot of people settle for a strat. Its only playing good gear that makes you a snob.

I wouldnt touch a strat because they are too noisy to deal with. Peavy amps just dont have the sound I like.

If you don't like strats thats fine...but to hint that a strat isn't a good guitar makes you sound like you don't know that much about guitars.
With alot of the all time great guitar players using strats, you know.

Guys like jeff beck, eric clapton, stevie ray vaughn, buddy guy, leroy parnell, ect... could afford any make and model of guitar they wanted. so, why would they choose a strat. maybe its because you can't get the strat tone out of anything but a strat. the the single coil pickup hum is part of it...(unless you use a humbucking type of pickup) ..you have to take the bad with the good.

in my opinion humbuckers are lifeless when compared to single coils...but they are quiet. single coils are noisy....but the sound so much better

you can put humbuckers on a strat....but then thats kind of like putting sardines on a pizza

My American Deluxe Strat has noisless pups, it is very quiet, and sounds great. As far as the Peavey/Marshall controversey, a Line 6 would probably be better, like a previous poster stated. Neither of those other amps are gonna take you into the rectofied realm. The Line 6 will at least get you in the ball park. BTW, I like peavey gear, guitars and amps.

Two words for ya:

Iron Maiden

:)

I was actually messing around with a friend's computer the other day and he busted out his little practice rig - a brand new Valvestate combo and an American Strat. I got all kinds of neat tones out of that little package as we were sitting there.

If Grif loves Maiden, he and I might get along more than we thought! :)

"I'm waiting in my cold cell
When the bell begins to chime
Reflections on my past life....."

Nice.

cheerz. Up the Irons

Hehe

I've been looking so long for you now
you won't get away from my grasp
You've been living so long in hiding
in hiding behind that false mask
You know and I know that you ain't got that long to last
Looks like your feelings are just the remains of your past

Or how about

He's walking like a damned man
If he had lived he would have crucified us all
Now he's standing on his last step
He thought oblivion, well, it beckons us all
Children of the Damned

Perhaps you'd prefer

Bind all of us together
Ablaze with hope and free
No storm or heavy weather
will rock the boat, you see
The time has come to close your eyes
Still the wind and rain
For the one who will be king
The watcher in the ring
It is you

Or better yet

Now I am cold but a ghost lives in my veins
Silent the terrible blade - marbled in stone
A shell of a man God preserved for a thousand ages
But open the gates of my hell - I will strike from the grave

Up the Irons

Damn skippy, mate! :D

Let's see...

Hallowed be thy Name
Phantom of the Opera
Children of the Damned (obviously)
Revelations
Powerslave

Do I win a BOOBIE prize?

No - you have to pass stage 2 of the test now :)

Unchain the colors before my eyes
Yesterday's sorrows - tomorrow's my life
Out in the madness - the all seeing eye
Hovers above us to light up the sky

Still with me?

Now it's clear and I know what I have to do
I must take you down there to look at them too
Hand in hand then we'll jump right into that pool
Can't you see - not just me they want you too

Heehee - getting more obscure!

Throwing dice now - rolling loaded
I see sixes all the way
In a black hole and I'm spinning
As my wings get shot away

Stumped yet?

Was many years ago that I left home and came this way
I was a young man full of hopes and dreams
But now it seems to me that all is lost and nothing gained...

*scritch scratch* on the noggin...

Now that they see the disaster is done
Now they put all the blame onto me
They feel I've brought on a curse
Don't they know that the torment it stays with me
Knowing that I walk alone
Through the eyes of the future I see...

and if that didn't break your brain, let me know and I'll throw a few more out at you..

P.S. - these are all right off the top of my head - I've been a fan since '83 :)

Alrighty then, Grif and I are best friends from now on:

Remember Tomorrow
Still Life
Back In the Village

Can't figure the last 2. They're probably on a album, after 7th son.
I don't listen "No prayer" that often. I don't have the X-factor and Virtual XI, because I hate Blaze's vocals, and from Fear of the Dark, I only have 5 songs. But from 1980-1987 I got about everything, except for the Soundhouse tapes ofcourse. :(

fill me in, Grif. Maiden rulez!

my fav. songs:
Strange world
Phantom of the opera
Killers
Wrathchild
Prisoner
The Trooper
Die with your boots on
Still Life
To tame a land
Back in the Village
Powerslave
Caught somewhere in time
Deja vu
Alexander the great
Loneliness of the long distant runner
Moonchild
Evil that men do
Only the good die young
Run silent, run deep
Be quick or be dead
Fear of the Dark
Ghost of the navigator
Nomad

wow! chronologic too. Am I not the man right now?

Ok lets see, under 600.00 and Godsmack tone...humm.
Well from my experience it would have to be either a Marshall DSL 1x12 Combo, awesome amp for the money. It can get 3 different tones. Plexi, JCM800 and Modern "Godsmack" Overdrive!
2nd would have to be a used Mesa Boogie 1x12. Any model with an EQ. IMO, Mesa Boogie combo amps are the "BEST" at any more popular "Retail" outlets.
Excluding Boutique amps,vintage,Soldano quality,etc.

Alright Grif and Speed,

Last two:

Stranger in a Strange Land
The Propecy

And damn I love Back in the Villiage. That guitar riff is so kick ass!
