Kaydis, I have come to my conclusion as a result of pulling my hair out tome and time again mixing on a decent set of home stereo speakers....nothin more frustrating than nailing a mix on them and taking them to another stereo and a certain frequency is just screamin at you.....luckily, I have some hair left and found this BBS that finally explained why this occurs....if you wanna ask why the principle doesnt apply both ways, let me quote another truth ive learned here - use your ears, if it sounds good , it is good....while i despise spending money on equipment that just isnt necessay for my needs (ask anyone here), ill gladly fork out 89.00 a piece for the Yorkville....im not saying im right or wrong (ok, i am saying im right), but it is very hard to learn to mix on a set of consumer type speakers.....

Gidge, I'll take your word for it since your a Recording Genius :) I'm really just trying to understand it all myself. It seems like the majority of the recording world is on your side. I'll probably be getting a set of monitors in the next year or so and I've always figured I'd get the most accurate thing I care to afford, so while I may like to question conventional wisdom, deep down I think your right too.

Recording Genius by post count only....and according to your last post, we are on the same side of the fence....im recording on a $149 sound card with a $79 mic with a $80 preamp and a $300 guitar (prob worth 50 now) on a cheapo computer with $50 software.....

Would I like more...sure...but it is a constant process of weighing the amount I can afford and what would do me the most good and all the while reminding myself that im just a guy in the corner of a spare bedroom making demos....all i really want now is a decent condenser mic and monitors....

with that said, i could easily upgrade my mic next to a nice condenser first, but what good would it do if I cant accurately hear the sound that the mic is getting because my speakers are lying to me....if i knew then what i knew now, i would have a set of Yorkvilles already....

sounds familiar

it really gets my irish up to hear a thread about a rich kid who is just starting and his budget is about 100000 bucks or he inherited ocean studios. i work for a living and finding extra money for equipment is not easy,but i still manage to keep up.
you have offered good advise to me personally several times and ive even quoted you here and there.

so good luck

by the way i just graduated to junior member , does this mean i cant start a thread in the newbie section anymore?:rolleyes:

Bruce may seem arrogant, but he's mixing for the money, and he knows his stuff. He's right - don't waste time with crap monitors.
Get a good pair and get used to mixing on them. Period.

Bob

in Eq mag, last year, there was a guy who said that his favorite monitors were $15 radioshack optimus something or the other. He mixes for big names.

I searched on the internet and it was surprissing to see how many pros trusted the same $15 optimus speakers. Now I think they are called minimus lx something or the other and they cost like $80 a peice. They are really small. like computer speakers

leventhal

bob leventhal i belive. but he uses them as a second opinion to his ns10 set.

and im not going to argue with bruce his point that they are just for seeing what the mix will sound like on ordinary stereo speakers.that is the point i was making at the start of this thread the radio shack speakers are not a replasement for real studio monitors. but the mixes for the clients may sound better to them on lx5 speakers than ns10s.

but a second opinion set is important i am curious as to what bruce is using for his second set of monitors.:D

Darrin_h2000,

Primaries --> Event PS6 with Tannoy sub (all actives)
Secondaries --> PSB Century 300i bookshelfs powered by Samson 550 amp
3rd --> a single Radio Shack cheapie (1 driver)
4th --> a single Koss cheapie computer speaker (2 drivers)
5th --> basic Panasonic boombox

Both 3rd/4th references are for mono only...

Bruce

your 4th is listed as a koss cheap computer speaker. thats cleaver ,i mix on a hard disk machine so that had not occured to me. (im sure there is one arround here even cheaper than the koss) i think ill try it thanks.:D

actually,
it was not Bob leventhal. This guy was an arrogant sounding bastard that thought he was God or something.

Anyhow, the optimus were his favorite speakers. He said that he did not like the big speakers in the wall cos the sound like crap. You can only get a good mix on them if you know the big speakers VERY well.

Anyhow..

the name on that quote was leventhal. plain as day. ive got a copy. decent artical by the way alot of new information for me like the importance of time alighnment. specs like transient and impulse response.

alot of this explains why a flat response curve isnt the only important spec to achive accuracy.;)
