gonna buy a bulk of cables...one short question

ok,

i got a nice lill home studio and i'm constantly upgrading,
got some nice equipment but i hate ALL my cables

every single cable in my room is self-made, with cheap shit cause i was worse than broke when i needed cables

now i got a better budget and want to get rid of MY cables,
and i want something REAL now

last month i bought a little 'stock' of Yorkville cables,
got some mogami stuff too,


but now i got the oppertunity to buy a shedload of Yorkville cables
(insert cables) and an entire bunch of XLR-->trs

the question, hehe, i'm gonna buy lots of cables, not just 5,
so its gonna cost

i don't know anything about yorkville, exept that they look great, sound ok, no cracking or noizes when you move the cables when connected to equipment

but i only used them for a few weeks,
is it a good idea to spend lots of money on this brand?

and i can go for a real BIG dump of cables, but then its secondhand...

would you do it? buy second hand cables? even if its a decent brand or so?

i'd highly appreciate any comments :rolleyes:

Whatever you do don't buy "Live wire" Premium. They come with a Craftsmanesque guarantee which is nice and all but when you have to go exchange it every three weeks (seriously) it costs me more in gas than the gaurantee is worth. Sorry if I did'nt answer your question but i've waqnted to bitch about this for awhile and this seemed like an apropriate place to do so.
I do know that Yorkville/Traynor has an overall reputation for quality but i can not personally attest to the quality of thier cables and accessories. I'd jump up and down on one a few times, pull it out of a jack with like a foot of slack, bite into it and if you still think they work fine buy a shit load of them. Oh and Second hand cables....NO WAY. I find that no matter what the cable or how gently treated, they age fairly rapidly. I think I had a whirlwind that lasted like 9 years or so before it farted out on me and thats my record. They get worse with age no matter what. A big lot of used and abused cables runs a high risk of at least one one of them crapping out on you at a critical moment during a critical application. I find that cables are more of a consumable and less of a durable good. Like batteries.
 
Why not buy canare or mogami bulk cable, the ends you need and make them yourself? It's a hell of alot cheaper but it does take some work.

I'll never buy a cable again. Matter of fact, I keep a spool of canare on hand and just make what I need now that I have the bulk of them already made.
 
I make my own cables now too. Not too hard once you get the hang of it. I keep a spool of Canare around as well, along with the some Connectronics cable. Actually, I keep several different kinds of cable and connectors stocked at all times, just for those times when I need a cable. I even make my own AES cables now. Saves a lot of money.
 
Where do you buy your bulk cable for making your own? Worst part for me it seems in buying stock cables are the lengths never seem to be what I'm looking for, or the cost of the length I need is really no less then the longer lengths. So I end up buying the longer lengths and have cable nightmare - excess cable all over the place.
I might prefer to just buy and make the cables I need to length and be done with it.
Also, while you mention your cable supplier, where do you pick up the ends? Found anything good or bad about any particular brand while making your own cables?

my problem is: i can solder, but i'm not a king in it :o

most of my self made cables are gonna end up in the trash bin soon or later,
but of course, i made them with very very cheap connectors and wire

thats why i thought, mhhhh, ok, lets buy some well built cables,
but i guess that soldering neutrik and mogami together might be alot easier than the junk i have....sometimes the solder just didn't want to stick to the XLR connectors,,,nightmare;;;

and i got a terrible memory, ok, i already made 'lots' of cables,
but its a while ago, and i can't really remember all the connections,
i do have some simple schematics laying around, but even when i look at them i get confused,,,,,,i just abused my mind too much with drugs and alcohol....got entire holes in me head :confused:

so Ok, i'm gonna buy me 50 meters of canare,
i know a pretty nice store in Germany that sells all i need, online,
its impossible to find this stuff in belgium, at least seems like it !!

so where do i get my stuff from? i worked in the USA, know some engineers there, its always easier to get stuff from the US, even with the shipping costs its A L O T cheaper than in most European countries

ebay ? yeah, try it, bought lots of stuff there

now my next step is:

50 meter of cable, i want balanced cables,
but i just don't know enough about how much gauche it should be (the thickness of the wires, am i using the right word?) ,
the thicker the better i assume

so if i buy some second hand monster cables today,
i can go change them for new ones?

damn, i haven't found one fucking store in this country that has monster cables

i just never payed interest in warrantees, most of the time you have to threaten the salesman to death to get some help
 
I buy my cables and neutrik connectors from Full Compass. I usually order a 600 foot spool of Canare cable and just cut off the sizes I need as I need them.
