Give me your reference list for hard rock/metal...

If that isn't your description of a badass I don't know what is.

Actually, i would call that being talented...not badass...

Phil Collins is quite talented, but a badass? i think not...

He'd have to like do a duet with Gwar or something like that before i could even consider calling him a badass....

Is there a new Phil Collins your all talking about or the old Phil Collins that played drums on Nursery Crymes for some acid band in the 70's and then 20 years ago had some pop tunes that dance bars would play loud...and he made millions and all of a sudden the music industry quiete slamming the door in his face...

Since when is hard rock/heavy metal the only valid type of music?

I'd rather listen to Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles over Kiss or Motorhead. Personally, those bands are far more real and revolutionary than 90% of the heavy metal genre.

Heavy metal = not real. Not even close.

One album in particular I listened to a lot a while ago, was Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar babies. I was bowled over by the great sound and production. Even today the clarity and the space around those huge guitars in Hello Hurray is brilliant. When that came out in 72, we were listening to the Osmonds and Gilbert O'Sullivan

i think that inutero sounds bigger and better than nevermind. especially the guitars and drums...........i don't know how steve albini did it...........well i know he uses a lot of room mics..........but damn that record sounds good.


the bassdrum on nevermind sounds different on some songs..........and the other studio was also in california and i believe that only 3 songs were used from that studio.....polly, something in the way, and i dont remember the third, or if there was a third..the little studio was also in california and only a couple hours away from the big studio.

i think that inutero would be a good reference disc for any rock............and the new a perfect circle cd also.

I'm not exactly a top level producer or engineer, but these 'heavy' albums appeal to me for their production, all for different reasons.

Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache

Impossibly polished yet still bone crushingly heavy, this album is super slick but doesn't have an overly processed or sterile sound but instead is very warm and sounds huge. The bands guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz produced this and has done a few other albums as well, he's amazing.

Meshuggah - Chaosphere

I could've picked any of the Meshuggah albums but this one does it for me. It's heavy from start to finish but even with guitars tuned so low, and the focus on guitar/drum/bass heavy rythms, the definition with each instrument is still great. And the vocals just jump out like they're going to rip you're head off.

Lamb Of God - As the Palaces Burn

Produced by Devin Townsend, this is a dirty and raw sounding album, but seems to suit the band perfectly. Only criticism is maybe the vocals are lacking a little bit of presence.

Machine Head - Burn My Eyes

I think someone said earlier about The More Things Change being a great one, but this is better IMO. The guitars are massive and incredibly savage, and the drums are pounding, overall a cleaner and more precise sound than TMTC. Has dated impressively well for a metal album and still sounds relevant today (even more impressive considering it was the bands first release).

DEFTONES i say DEFTONES recordings are totally brilliant in my view. Apart from maybe the bass, but the rest is brilliant. The bass is just a bit bland.
The snare is my favourite sound. The drums are soooo meaty with lots of reverb and punch and really stand out. I i wish i could mix like that!! maybe one day eh!
The guitars are real nice also and dont take up much bottom to mid botom end, so the bass and guitars sit well together.
Nice stereo mix and the vocals are really thick and stand out without killing the rest of the parts. Nice choice of effects for vocals and the rest.

i think Lamb of God's new american gospel and as the palaces burn albums have a unique and ass-kickin sound.

also, a kind of obscure album with a cool sound is testament - low.

i think one of the worst mixes lately is velvet revolver's album, its hard to tell what all is going on.

If you guys have a minute, could you give a quick listen to some of these songs here, and let me know what you think of the mixes? I know they all sound different, but mostly I'm just looking for feedback on the low end, kick drum/bass guitar relationship ...

Let me know any problems you hear, or things I could do to improve them (besides retracking in a $$$tudio)
